John Mayer and Jessica Simpson back together?

Jessica Simpson and John Mayer's shock split appears to have been a little short-lived - Mayer was spotted leaving the Simpson's New York hotel early yesterday morning.

Representatives for the pair had confirmed that the couple's short romance had ended at the beginning of last week, but Jessica Simpson had refused to talk about the split during press interviews at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

But, upon her return to America on Sunday, it appeard that the couple may have sorted their differences.

An onlooker who spotted Mayer leaving Simpson's suite at the Soho Grand tells 'In Touch Weekly':

"He was looking really happy. He couldn't stop smiling." But a Simpson pal insists the couple has got some way to go before they start thinking about a long-term future together: "They definitely went on a date last night. She still loves him... but he's scared of commitment. He breaks up with her and then regrets it and then begs her to get back together."
