German church attacks Tom Cruise over his Scientology beliefs

The German Protestant Church has launched a scathing attack on 'Scientologist' Tom Cruise over his strict, and strangely bizarre Scientology beliefs, likening the actor to the Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels.

Cruise, is playing World War II hero Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg - who led an unsuccessful plot to assassinate Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler - in his new film 'Rubicon'.

However, efforts to shoot the movie on military sites have been snubbed by Germany's defense Ministry, allegedly because Cruise's Scientology beliefs are viewed as a "money-making cult" instead of a legitimate church by the German government.

And now the German Protestant Church has added fuel to the fire by comparing the actor to one of Hitler's closest allies, renowned for his zealous and outspoken nature.

Thomas Gandow, the Church's chief spokesman on religious cults, dismissed Cruise's controversial religion as a "totalitarian organization" with the Top Gun star equivalent to "the Goebbels of Scientology".

Gandow added, "This film will have the same propaganda advantages for Scientology as the 1936 Olympics had for the Nazis."

Well no, JeraldR, my comment defines part of a political situation and implies some information about why and how the vested interests of the German political machine seek to hold the religious mechanism in place that has served them for some years.

The article leaves out the most salient point of protest - the German Protestant Church's motivation for criticizm. Germany has but two, state supported "official" religions. Those are both in the unique position of enjoying monies dispersed to them by the German government. Any other religious throught is a direct threat to their coffers. Thus any other religion becomes a "sect" for the German Protestant Church's propaganda ministry to rail against.

Wow leave it to Terryeo, a member of scientology to defend scientology by saying another faith is worse. At least he hasn't tossed the word bigot around yet. Thats their next fav choice.
Why do they call scientology a cult? check out xenu.net and xenutv.com and see for yourself.

Or just google scientology and deaths, sceintology and crimes, scientology and the internet. Don't leave out scientology and snow white or scientology and fair game.

Just because the german church and other religions do, or have done, bad things does not necessarily make the scifi cult innocent of misdeeds. Two wrongs don't make a right.
That said, I can understand why germans would be shy about having them around since in some ways the cult does exhibit some nazi-like tendencies and they don't want the same thing to repeat itself. Remember, the nazis also thought (and made their followers and supporters believe) they were doing something good for the world.
