Daniel Radcliffe buys luxury Manhattan apartment for $4.3 million
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has bought a luxury Manhattan apartment -for just under $4.3 million USD.
The actor, who only turned 18-years-old in July, has already put the property on the rental market, at a cool $20,000-USD-a-month.
The 1,843 sq ft fifth-floor apartment is in a 13-storey, glass-walled condominium building in trendy SoHo, designed by architect Jean Nouvel. It has been dubbed the "sexiest new development" in the area. It has two bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms and floor to ceiling windows.
The 40-unit building features a 50-foot swimming pool, a steam room and concierge "hotel-like" services.
It could serve as a base for the young star when he makes his Broadway debut next September [2008] in a revival of Equus.
But it is not clear if he will live in it, or if it was bought as an investment, after it was put on the rental market soon after the May purchase, with an asking price of $20,000-USD-a-month.
Chris Pomeroy, who is listing the apartment at property firm Halstead, told a US newspaper that it was available for rent "for at least a year," which would keep it occupied until after the scheduled opening of Equus.
Radcliffe has played boy wizard Harry Potter in all five films based on the books by author J.K. Rowling so far.
Property records reveal the purchase was made by Gilmore Jacobs Ltd., the company set up by Radcliffe's parents just before the release of the first Harry Potter movie in 2001, when he was 11-years-old.
The films have grossed more than $4.4 billion USD to date. Gilmore Jacobs is now worth a reported $40 million USD.
Radcliffe gained control of his earnings when he turned 18, it has been reported. Then, he was quoted as saying that he wasn't planning to be "particularly extravagant."
He said: "The things I like buying are things that cost about $10 - books and CDs and DVDs."
A spokesperson for Radcliffe was unavailable for comment today.
His new home is just steps from the offices of Scholastic Inc., the Harry Potter books' US publisher.

Ok I think this whole thing
Ok I think this whole thing about making him look like a hypocrite is ridiculous. Did you all forget he is bloody going to be in NYC for 6 months? Does it make sense to you for him to pay ridiculous fees to room in a hotel for 6 months? He goes to NYC all the time, and he is going to be there for half a year, it makes sense for him to get a place of his own there. Real Esate is expensive in Manhattan, and he can't exactly buy a grungy appartment. He needs a protected security stalked flat.
Probably not a smart
Probably not a smart investment. New York real estate is likely to decline more in value over the next year or so and he could have had his pied a terre in New York for far far less by renting. If he wanted to buy he probably would have been smart to wait for the market in New York to bottom. He'll be lucky to get $20,000 rent. That's 12% gross when 8% is typical in New York.
