Nicole Richie was surprised she had a girl - according to pal Lauren Conrad, who revealed that the 26-year-old socialite was blissfully un-aware of the baby's sex prior to giving birth yesterday.

"No, she didn't know," The Hills star - who recently denied rumors she'd been fired as an intern by Teen Vogue magazine, said. "She was surprised."

Richie and her fiancé, Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, 28, named their baby Harlow Winter Kate Madden.

Conrad also put clarified reports that she and Whitney Port had left Teen Vogue. "Yeah, I'm not there anymore," she said. "I don't really know what is next. I am looking right now."

As for Internet rumors that Port had landed a job at W, Conrad said, "I don't know. I didn't hear that."

The baby is Nicole and Joel's first child together. Richie first broke the news of her pregnancy on TV show Good Morning America in August.
