2008 Academy Awards nominations revealed

The Oscars ceremony may still be in doubt but the nominees for the 80th annual Academy Awards have today been announced.

There was a distinct lack of British flavour as Keira Knightley and James McAvoy were overlooked for their critically acclaimed roles in the World War II romantic drama 'Atonement'.

Julie Christie was the lone major British nomination, picking up a nod for Best actress for her role in 'Away From Her.'

However, Irish actress Saoirse Ronan was nominated for best supporting actress for her part in 'Atonement'.

And British-born Irishman Daniel Day-Lewis scooped a nomination for best actor for his role in 'There Will Be Blood.'

The Best Picture award will be fought out by 'Atonement', 'Juno', 'Michael Clayton', 'No Country for Old Men', and 'There Will be Blood'.

Daniel Day-Lewis will go head to head with George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Tommy Lee Jones and Viggo Mortensen for Best Actor.

Cate Blanchett, Julie Christie, Marion Cotillard, Laura Linney and newcomer Ellen Page have all been nominated for Best Actress.

It has not yet been confirmed if the Oscars glitzy ceremony will go ahead on February 24, because of the impact of the ongoing Hollywood writers strike.

Satirical TV host Jon Stewart, of The Daily Show, will again host the ceremony if it gets the green light.

Hollywood stars refused to turn out for the Golden Globes ceremony after a show of support from their union, the Screen Actors Guild for the Writers Guild of America.

The WGA has been out on strike since November 5 in a dispute over royalties.

It has been rumoured that two Oscar ceremony plans have already been put in place, one with actors turning up and one without.
