Is Michael Caine on a diet?

Sir Michael Caine says he doesn't believe in New Year resolutions - but left shoppers wondering whether he's put himself on a diet to shed his bulging tum.

The veteran actor was seen clutching cans of Diet Coke and the dietary supplement, Splenda, while wife Shakira filled their trolley with groceries on a visit to a supermarket in Miami, Florida, where they are holidaying.

Sir Michael, 74, didn't seem at all pleased to be spotted, turning his back and trying to hide behind his wife as they made their way to the car park.

And he angrily wagged his finger before storming off in a huff.

But their was no hiding his obvious paunch, as he left the store wearing a snug-fitting navy blue top, dark trousers and a brown cap.

Just weeks ago, Sir Michael said he hadn't made New Year resolutions for 2008 - because he reckons he's 'too old.'

"When you get to my age you just think, 'To hell with it!'" he said.

He said people should concentrate on the present instead or risk seeing life pass them by. "I have got some good advice," he said. "Live your life every day. Don't worry about tomorrow, and especially don't worry about yesterday.

"And most importantly, never worry about things you can't do anything about."
