Amy Winehouse's dad hopful his daughter "will quit drugs for good"
Amy Winehouse's devastated dad last night claimed that revelation of yesterday's shocking video could convince his troubled daughter to quit drugs for good.
Mitch, 57, said that the footage of Amy smoking crack, obtained by British newspaper The Sun, may prove to be the wake-up call her family has longed for.
He told The Sun newspaper: “Your video of Amy taking drugs may well be the best thing that has ever happened to her.
“Of course it kills me to see my daughter on the front page of your newspaper like that.
“It’s nothing short of devastating - thinking she wants to destroy herself. She’ll be heartbroken about it all.
“But for all the hurt and pain, it may finally be the thing to focus her mind and convince her to get the help she needs to quit for good.”
Last night, London police were examining the tape to see whether the singer - famous for the lyrics "they tried to make me go to rehab, I said no, no, no," can be charged with a criminal offense.
The footage, which was revealed yesterday, shows the beehived soul diva smoking hit upon hit of crack after a 19-minute binge in which she snorted powdered ecstasy and cocaine.
The film was later passed to the police.
A Met spokesman said last night: “Now we have received the information we will be viewing the footage to ascertain whether any action needs to be taken. We thank The Sun for its co-operation.”
Taxi driver Mitch added: “No one recognises the problems more than her and seeing images of herself like that may make the difference.
“The moment she says the words, ‘Right Dad go, this is it’, there will be an avalanche of support for her. The plans have been in place for a long time.”
Mitch said that, until Friday’s relapse, Amy had been slowly beating her deadly habit on a drug treatment programme.
He added: “The painful thing is how well she’s been doing in the past few weeks.
“Amy has some of the best doctors in the world looking after her. I know they’d been pleased with her progress. But obviously, in the light of this, we may have to ramp up that support. Amy is very sick.”
