Jane Fonda said “cu*t” on the Today show
Jane Fonda stunned American viewers today by saying “cunt” on breakfast TV.
Fonda was on the Today show - the most watched breakfast show in the States - when she clearly said the word during an interview.
Interviewer Meredith Vieira looked horrified - but said nothing, hoping viewers wouldn’t realize. “It was pretty embarrassing,” one viewer said. “But I guess you’re asking for trouble if you decide to cover The Vagina Monologues stage show on family TV.”
Fonda was being interviewed about V Day, a star-studded event to end violence against women that stemmed from the popularity of the Vagina Monologues.
Fonda let slip the offensive word when she recalled first getting involved in the Vagina Monologues. “It wasn’t that I wasn’t a big fan, but I hadn’t seen the play - I live in Georgia,” she said about the delay in getting involved.
“Then I was asked to do a monologue called ‘c**t’, and I said, ‘I don’t think so. I’ve got enough problems’.
“Then I came to New York and saw it and it changed my life. I was theoretically a feminist but I didn’t always live it behind closed doors.
“When I saw the Vagina Monologues I’d never laughed or cried so hard in the theater. I think it was while I was laughing that something happened and I kind of slipped into my body and I’ve really changed.”

Big deal. In a segment about the Vagina Monologues? Her monologue was called “cunt”.
Hello people - context is everything.

Get real. Fonda knew the word is illegal on broadcast TV — she wasn’t born yesterday. It’s very easy to use a euphemism that precisely conveys the word in context. I hope the network gets fined a full half million. The publicity will probably be worth it to them, though.
They must be desperate for ratings, to feature “The Vagina Monologues” on family TV!

I agree with the comment context is everything. And by the way, what’s a euphamism for cunt? Pussy? Other posts write “It takes one to know one”-what??? She didn’t call anyone a cunt for godsakes, and I don’t know about you, but when I was an impressionable kid I wasn’t watching Jane Fonda interviews!! So take all that conservative crap and shove it!!

Context, context, context…but then again if we kept things in context where would our news stories be.

This is much to do about nothing. She was simply naming the title of a monologue. I guess the Puritans are still living among us.

Coming from the Viet Nam War era, I remembering Jane Fonda’s trip to Hanoi, and how much anger there was amoung the Vets then and now. Perhaps she has been called by the word so often that she thinks it’s part of normal usage. Personally, I rate this event with Janet Jackson’s breast exposure, just cheap shock value.
