Paul McCartney "disillusioned" by $110m divorce settlement

February 19 2008

Heather Mills and Paul McCartneyPaul McCartney failed to show up for the final round in his High Court hearing with Heather Mills yesterday - because his legal team advised him he could save millions by letting High Court judge Mr Justice Bennett decide on a payout for his estranged wife.

Paul, 65, was advised not to attend Monday's hearing by his legal team - Fiona Shackleton and Nicholas Mostyn QC - as it would probably work out cheaper to let the judge decide how much of the former Beatles' fortune the ex-hooker is entitled to.

Mills was expecting a to walk away with a settlement of around $110m - and turned up fully hoping the deal would be signed shortly after 9am yesterday.

After realizing Paul had "stood her up" at court - Heather - who sources say had been celebrating the imminent deal all weekend, was said to be "incandescent with rage".

Paul is understood to have spent the day in rehearsals for the Brit Awards. He is due to pick up a lifetime achievement award at the ceremony at Earls Court on Wednesday.

Heather, 40, will now face an agonizing wait to discover how much of Sir Paul's estimated $1.6bn fortune she will be awarded after Mr Justice Bennett ruled yesterday that in the peculiar circumstances, he would be reserving his judgment.

An insider told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper yesterday: "Paul pulled the plug very late in the day. Heather is devastated.

"Paul is the one with the fabulously successful legal team and Heather has been working on her wits alone. For them to pull off a stunt like this, they must think they are in a strong position.

"They spent all week in court and Heather perhaps unwittingly spent the week showing her hand.

"Paul's team now look to have played a very clever game, saying 'we'll settle, we'll settle'.

"His team basically now know the worst of what she can throw at him in court. They smoked out the worst she had."

Adds the source: "They are pulling the plug on it because they think the judge may well agree Heather deserves less than the £55million ($110m).

"Shackleton and Mostyn clearly think it's a risk worth taking. And if Paul gets a lower settlement and Heather does win the right to appeal, they now know the worst of what she can throw at them is not much more than has become public anyway.

"Paul was going along with everything all last week. But over the week he was becoming gradually more disillusioned by what was being agreed.

"It was he who pulled the plug. Heather was desperate to settle and had been convinced they had been in total agreement - right up until she arrived at court."

I just hope all the

I just hope all the settlement is held in escro for the kid and the bitch gets nothing. Point though! Her future is going to be very interesting since time has a way of fixing things. Bet she's going to be taken for a ride by some clever 'boy-toy' and will end up broke. We can only hope.

That's why you spend the big

That's why you spend the big bucks on a lawyer, Heather. They know what to give away and what to hold back. The truth is he has every right to reject the offer.

I would say it was more

I would say it was more delusional that she thought she was going to get that kind of money. They were married less than 4 years. But in all fairness it must have seemed like 40 to Paul. lol

Exactly, good on you Paul. Take all your options. Let her overdraft get bigger. Clip some coupons, dear. It helps.

Go, Paul! None of us will

Go, Paul! None of us will believe a word that witch says anyway. Don't let her get a penny more than she deserves.

Very clever, Mr. McCartney.

Very clever, Mr. McCartney. No wonder you're so wealthy and successful.

what don't people get about

what don't people get about a gag order. What happens behind closed doors should stay that way. There is a child involved and family issues good and bad should stay in the McCartney family. So she wants multimillions of dollars and she wants to make more talking about personal things. She's not a golddigger, a golddigger would take the money and run. She's worse.

This report is inaccurate.

This report is inaccurate. No one pulled any plug. The couple simply couldn't come to terms. Paul didn't show up because he wasn't needed. Now the judge will decide in about a month. My guess is that whatever that decision is, Heather will appeal it. Because the appeals court is public and H will be free to talk about the case as much as she likes. I'm sorry Paul made such a bad a pick, but why get mad at her for that? He's the one that so foolishly got involved w/someone so soon after his wife's death. He's the one who ignored his advisors and did get a pre-nup. If he pays through the nose...too bad! You won't find me weeping. He could lose it all, and then, due to investments and royalties, still make more in the next year than I will will in a lifetime. Plus he's busily earning more...I'm seeing him in June (in concert, that is).

So in the end McCartney is

So in the end McCartney is paying for a team of obscenely high-priced legal eagles to pull a stunt in the desperate hope of reducing the kiss-off when all Heather ever really wants to do is to kiss and tell and make Macca's name dirt. If Heather doesn't get what she wants, that will be exactly what she will do.

They say a fool and his money soon part, and there's no fool like an old fool, eh Paul?

Good on you Sir Paul!

Good on you Sir Paul!
