Here are the gravity-defying shoes that have become a favourite with stars like Victoria Beckham, Gwyneth Paltrow and Uma Thurman.

The stunning Antonio Berardi stilettos stand 5.5-inches tall - except bizarrely they come without any heel. Instead its glamorous owners have to balance all their weight on a thickened platform sole.

Posh Spice has reportedly shelled out $3,600 for a pair in swanky snakeskin, while Gwyneth and Uma spent $2,700 on the black patent leather version.

A spokesman for Berardi's Paris-based fashion house said: "The shoe has a bigger platform sole which stretches back further than normal and gives support under the arch of the foot.

"When walking though, you have to put your toe rather than your heel down first and you cannot wear them for very long.

"They are not dangerous because you would have to lean quite far back before you fell over."
