Times Square shut down after explosion in a military recruitment office

March 6 2008

New York's world famous Times Square was shut down today after an explosion rocked a military recruitment office.

Police closed off the busy area after the 'pipe bomb' blast shook the office at 3.45am. It has been reported that a second unexploded device was also discovered.

No one was injured in the blast, which reportedly was caused by a canister packed with gunpowder, but the recruitment centre's window and door was damaged.

Police say they are searching for a man on a bike who was seen in the area at the time of the blast.

Armed NYPD officers immediately swarmed onto the streets of Midtown Manhattan and bomb-sniffing dogs to contain the area.
Times Square has now been fully reopened.
