Britney Spears to star in How I Met Your Mother

Britney Spears is set to make a guest appearance in a US television sitcom.

The troubled singer is "in talks" to appear in the prime time CBS show, How I Met Your Mother, sources have said.

It is not clear what role Spears, 26, would be or when the episode would be broadcast.

But according to one US report, a source close to the series said it would be taped this week and would be broadcast on March 24.

The source said that Spears shares scenes with the show's star, Josh Radnor, playing a woman who works in a doctor's office and who falls for him.

Spears' last appearance in a prim etime TV series was on sitcom Will & Grace in 2006. And in 2005 she appeared in reality show Britney & Kevin: Chaotic, with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

How I Met Your Mother co-stars Neil Patrick Harris as a leering womanizer. Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders also star.
