George Clooney beaten at the box office by Kate Bosworth
It was disappointment for George Clooney at the box office this weekend.
The Hollywood hunk's new football comedy was beaten by Kate Bosworth's casino thriller, 21, which retained the No. 1 spot for a second week, raking in $15.1 million.
Clooney's Leatherheads, co-starring Renée Zellweger and John Krasinski, debuted at No. 2 making just $13.5 million.
Leatherheads, which received mixed reviews, attracted audiences in their 30s and 40s but failed to attract younger crowds.
"I'm disappointed for us, I'm disappointed for George. I think he's a great guy and think he's got tons of directing talent," Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, told the Associated Press. "I wish I could have that crystal ball and tell you what went wrong."
Leatherheads was almost beaten by Nim's Island, the family adventure starring Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin, which earned $13.3 million.
The complete top 5:
1. 21, $15.1 million
2. Leatherheads, $13.5 million
3. Nim's Island, $13.3 million
4. Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who, $9.1 million
