As a fan of some of these 'great projects', it kills me to say it - in my weak moments, I too have wished for a Gladiator sequel. But, unless there's a truly compelling story to be told, it just doesn't make sense to push out another product. Sometimes, the results can be disastrous (and tarnish the image of the original product). See, e.g. Jurassic Park III, Star Wars Episodes I - III, Dumb and Dumberer 2, etc. People need to learn to leave great projects alone.
