Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe says he took the role in stage show Equus to prove that he could put aside childish things without being too obvious about it.
In the play, which debuts on Broadway later this month, Radcliffe, 19, plays Alan Strang, a stable boy who has an obsession with horses.
And Daniel insists it was the perfect role to prove his acting abilities.
He tells the New York Times newspaper, “If I went off and did another fantasy film, everyone would say, ‘He’s not even trying,’ but if I went off and played a drug dealer, they’d say, ‘God, he’s trying way too hard’.
“It’s also the fact that he’s very different from Harry, a very violent character — he’s mentally unstable, that’s the long and short of it.”
