Travis Barker, DJ AM Critically Injured in Plane Crash

Former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and famed Hollywood DJ DJ AM have been left critically injured after a Learjet crashed while departing from a South Carolina airport.

4 people were killed (two crew members and two passengers), while two people – Barker and DJ AM, real name Adam Goldstein – were injured.

“Both Travis Barker and Adam Goldstein are in critical but stable condition,” Beth Frits, spokesperson for the Joseph M. Still Burn Center, said. “Goldstein was airlifted here and Barker was brought by ground transportation. So they arrived separately.”

Barker had performed Friday night at an event alongside Perry Farrell, the former Jane’s Addiction singer, as well as Gavin DeGraw and DJ AM.

Neither DeGraw or Farrell were on board the plane, their respective representatives have confirmed.

“It’s absolutely terrible and tragic,” Columbia Mayor Bob Coble said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday from Columbia when air traffic controllers reported seeing sparks. She said the plane went off the runway and crashed on a nearby road.

Bergen said the Lear 60 was headed to Van Nuys, California.

Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman has identified three of the victims. Harman says the pilot, Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, CA; co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, CA; and Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, CA all perished in the crash.

Barker, 32, has two children with ex-wife, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler.

Goldstein at one time was engaged to Nicole Richie.

A representative for Barker and DJ AM said she had no information the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board has scheduled a news conference for 11:30am.

The airport will be closed until 12pm according to officials.

    i know a lot of people don’t care for travis, but he’s a human being just as you and i. it’s most definatly a blessing and unbelievable that he and adam survived. i have great respect for him as a musician and a person, and all i can say is they’re hre for a reason. there’s no other explanation as to why they survived that. i’ve been praying for them, i hope they recover fully.

    As a firefighter and a music fan, I have to say that this is truly a horrible thing to hear.I wish Travis and DJ AM the speediest of recoveries…

    Just to bring things into prespective for everyone, the palm of your hand is considered to be 1% of your body surface. When you hear that someone was burned 30% of their body, think 30 palms…it’s a lot of surface area and it doesn’t take much to add up quickly.

    Generally speaking, once you start getting 50% and higher, the odds are against you for survival. It’s not so much the burns that will kill you, it’s the secondary infections that result from severe burns. The skin is one of the primary defences against infection and once burned, it loses that ability to protect.

    In this case, where the burns are likely extensive and severe, the problem is that the body will lose a large amount of fluid quickly…as we all know, the body is made up of a lot of water (Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water, blood contains 95% water, body fat contains 14% water and bone has 22% water)…what happens in severe burns is that it disrupts the blood circulation and causes problems with the body’s salt balance.

    If the reports are accurate and Travis was burned from the waist down, then his odds are good for recovery. Depending on the severity of the burns though, he still could face amputation of one (or both) legs. It’s very doubtful that he will ever play drums again..and it’s still possible that he may not recover though.

    Unfortunately, from the sounds of it DJ AM is definitely in worse shape with burns to his face. People who have burns to their face usually also have burns to their nasal passages, windpipe and possibly lungs. Skin grafts can repair your face, but nothing can repair your windpipe and lungs from damage.

    Either way, my thoughts are with both of them. I truly hope they do recover from this.
