Kate Winslet Wins Big at The Golden Globes

The Golden Globe Awards returned with a bang last night – with Kate Winslet, Mickey Rourke and the late Heath Ledger stealing the show.
Last year’s event (the 65th Golden Globe Awards) was reduced to a press conference due to the Writers Guild of America strike. The ceremony was faced with a threat by striking writers to picket the event and by actors, threatening to boycott the ceremony, rather than cross picket lines. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was forced to adopt another approach for the broadcast.
But it was back in full swing Sunday – with likes of Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp taking to the red carpet.
Inside the ceremony, British actress Kate Winslet scooped best supporting actress for Nazi drama The Reader and best drama actress for her role with Leonardo DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road.
Kate apologized to the other actresses in her category when accepting her award for the latter: “I’m so sorry, Meryl (Streep), Anne (Hathaway), Kristin (Scott-Thomas), the other one… Angelina (Jolie)!,” she gasped.
“Thank you so much… thank you soooo much!,” before adding to longtime friend and fellow Titanic star DiCaprio: “I love you with all my heart, I really do!”
It was only the third time in Golden Globes history that an actor or actress had been honored with two awards on the same night.
Fellow British actress Sally Hawkins also landed best actress in a musical or comedy for her role in Mike Leigh’s Happy-Go-Lucky and there was also a posthumous Golden Globe for the late Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker in Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight.
However, Brit director Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner on the night, scooping a massive four awards, including best drama, best screenplay and best music.
Other winners included Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona which won best comedy film and Steven Spielberg was honored with the Golden Globes Cecile B. DeMille Award for his “outstanding contribution to the entertainment field”.
Waltz With Bashir won best foreign language film, Wall-E best animated film and Irish heart-throb Colin Farrell won the best actor in a comedy or musical for his performance in In Bruges.
