Slumdog Director Refuses to Join Any Conspiracy Theories

Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle insists he’s happy for people to “say what they like” about the critically acclaimed film – because he is not willing to participate in any conspiracy theories.

Slumdog
, an adaptation of the Boeke Prize winning and Commonwealth Writers’ Prize nominated novel Q and A by Indian author and diplomat Vikas Swarup, has been nominated for 10 Oscars.

But makers of the film – which stars upcoming actor Dev Patel – have faced protest in some quarters over the movie’s portrayal of slum life and accusations the child actors weren’t adequately compensated for their work.

But in a recent article in the LA Times newspaper, the publication suggested there were deliberate smear tactics at work to undermine the success of the rags-to-riches tale.

When asked if he thought that was the case, Danny – who is also known for his work on films such as Trainspotting and 28 Days Later – said, “Oh no, I’m not joining in any conspiracy theories! No way, no.

“You have the privilege of making a film, people can say what they like about it.

“You have some films that people really like, and some films that people really don’t, and that’s part of the responsibility of the job, is that you get the chance to make it and people get the chance to say what they like about it, and I’m happy for them to do that.”

Boyle said they had a “very precise plan” to look after two of the children in the film from poor backgrounds until they are 18 – “certainly long after any fuss has died down”.

“We’re very proud about that and we’re going to stick to that,” he added.

Danny said they were trying to get as many people as possible who were involved in the film over to Hollywood for Oscar time.

“We’re spending most of our time managing that – trying to get people on planes to come and enjoy some of the extraordinary recognition the film’s been given”.
