Drew Barrymore has lost out on the chance to direct the third Twilight film – the gig is reportedly set to go to Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona.

Earlier this week Barrymore – who recently finished work on her directorial debut, Whip It! starring Ellen Page – revealed she was on a shortlist to take over the teen vampire franchise after this year’s sequel New Moon.

“I’m one of the directors that is being talked about, which is great, because I’m a director now,” she said.

But Bayona – who directed the Spanish-language horror-thriller The Orphanage and has never directed an English-language film – will instead take the reigns of Eclipse.

Catherine Hardwicke directed the hugely successful first movie and Chris Weitz is onboard to helm this year’s sequel.

Eclipse is slated for a June 30, 2010 release.
