Hugh Laurie Regrets Dishing on Depression
Hugh Laurie regrets divulging details about his battle with depression – because it riles him when other celebrities whinge about their privileged lives.
The British star recently revealed he was once so low he sought treatment in the mid-1990s – and immediately wished he hadn’t been so forthcoming with details about his personal life.
He tells Parade magazine, “I wish I’d kept my mouth shut about that… Now an undue weight has been given to this aspect of my life.
“I don’t like to be thought of as this guy who has nothing else to talk about except how miserable my lot was.
“I remember watching Mel Gibson on some show once, and he was being asked about his belief in the afterlife. Gibson said, ‘Well, I can’t believe this is all there is.’ And I thought, ‘Wait a minute. You’re Mel Gibson. You have millions of dollars. You’re a great-looking chap with every conceivable blessing that could be bestowed upon a man. And that’s not good enough?’
“So you can see why I’m hesitant to talk about any trivial pain I have. I find myself going, ‘Oh, for God’s sake, Hugh. Pull yourself together.’
“I do know depression is a disease… It is the last great taboo – something people still don’t want to talk about.”

For Heaven’s sake, forget about “House”.
If you’ve never seen Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster, or in Blackadder, or in A Bit of Fry and Laurie, then you’ve missed out on his best works.
Don’t call yourself a fan of Hugh if all you know is House, which is a total travesty and waste of his talent.
Bertie, Bertie, Bertie why in the world would you think I’ve never seen Blackadder, Fry & Laurie or Jeeves & Wooster? What . . . just because I mention his current work to make a specific point? All the work he has done in his whole carrier, that he has significant input has been excellent. Maybe you should wake up in the 21 century and check out his current stuff. Of course you have checked out “House” and apparently didn’t like it sense you consider it “a total travesty and waste of his talent”. That’s odd that such a “fan” would think that way when the rest of the world has made the show a number 1 hit for him. He’s probably going to win an Emmy this year for that “travesty”! Go watch your re-runs while the rest of us enjoy him today!
celeb realises it’s not all about him—refreshing!!
not surprising that it’s hugh.
A lot of famous people are not as forthcoming as Hugh. They seclude themselves when they’re not working, don’t do interviews and hesitate to even sign autographs. Hugh tends to be somewhat of an open book in those interviews and always stops to sign autographs for his fans. Who hasn’t wished they could go back and un-say something said in the past. The more interviews with Hugh I read or watch the more I adore him. He is a sweet, smart, talented, sexy man. So what if he got depressed in the ‘90’s and sought treatment . . . I can just see him laying on the couch now . . . love all those laying down shots on “House”. Love Hugh Laurie!!
He’s such an awesome person….. and so hott it’s ridiculous!!
