Whoopi Goldberg: ‘Patrick Swayze is Kicking Butt’

Posted by Adam

Whoopi GoldbergWhoopi Goldberg says her Ghost costar Patrick Swayze is “kicking butt” and “doing the best he can.”

“He’s kicking butt,” Goldberg said of Swayze, who is battling pancreatic cancer. “And, you know, he’s sick. And he, like the rest of us, doesn’t know when it’s going to happen — because it will happen, that he is going to go — but he doesn’t know when or where.”

“His attitude is, why wait for it to happen?” she continued. “So he’s busy as hell.”

Since his cancer diagnosis more than a year ago, the 56-year-old Dirty Dancing star has thrown himself into work.

He’s writing a memoir and filmed the first season of A&E’s crime drama, The Beast, which concludes its season April 23.

Patrick denied reports in March that he is nearing “the end”.

Now as I get older it’s sad to see start that have gotten famous while I was young and then see them fall to illness. I’m 54 and amazed that along with his illness he had the emotional fortitude to throw himself back into a very rigorous schedule of a tv series. Everyone always speaks of Dirty Dancing, which of course I own and still play, but I and my girlfriends fell in love with this actor as Ory Main (if I got the name correct), from the TV mini-series North and South. I liked most of his other movies, but think Ghost besides Dirty Dancing was the most memoriable, and Whoopi is one of my favorites as well. She’s actually someone that you say to yourself when I see her on talk shows, “that’s someone I’d like to meet”. Very genuine.

Years ago, my grandmother passed away from the same type of cancer, on Christmas Day. As she was nearing the end, she sat upright in her hospital bed & said: “Oh look at that beautiful light” and laid back down…a few moments later, she did the same thing, my aunt, an RN asked her “what is it Momma” & gramma said, “Oh look, there it is again.” Moments later she passed, 6 days before her birthday. Shortly after that was when I saw the movie Ghost. At the very end, when all the angels came to greet him, I cried my eyes out knowing, that the angels had come for gramma & that was the beautiful light she must have been seeing…I could watch that movie again, and again etc.
