Helen Mirren, her nipples, and Russel Crowe were in London Tuesday for the world premiere of their new movie, State of Play.
The political thriller tells the story of a congressman and an investigative journalist embroiled in a spate of seemingly unrelated murders.
Mirren, who wore a cream-colored Donna Karan outfit and Jimmy Choo shoes, spent a brief time on the red carpet and swept past many waiting reporters. The 63-year-old plays a ruthless newspaper editor in the film –which was directed by Kevin Macdonald, whose credits include The Last King of Scotland.
The actress did, however, sign a number of autographs for members of the public before going into the cinema.
One fan said, “She’s sexier than many actresses half her age – and she doesn’t even seem to have to try.”

Oscar winner Crowe, who plays Cal McAffrey, a veteran reporter who untangles the world of spin, double-crossing and collusion, similarly walked past a section of reporters and waved and shrugged at them before going inside.

At the premiere, in Central London, the director was asked if he was disappointed Brad Pitt was not in the leading role. “Brad made it clear a week or two before filming that he did not see the same film as I did,” Macdonald said. “Creatively I could not be happier [with] Russell.”
Macdonald said Mirren loved playing a journalist but Crowe made it clear from the beginning he had some trepidation. “He wasn’t sure he could play a heroic character as a journalist.”
Mirren was “the most convincing ruthless editor”, Macdonald said.
