Kelis is to divorce her hip-hop star husband Nas, it was confirmed Thursday.

“I can confirm that she has filed for divorce,” a rep for Kelis, whose full name is Kelis Rogers-Jones, told E! News. “We request the media to respect her privacy during this very difficult time.”

The couple — who met at a 2002 MTV Video Music Awards afterparty hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs –  married Jan. 8, 2005, in Atlanta after a two-year engagement. They are expecting their first child together — a son — this summer. Nas, full name Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, has a teenage daughter from a previous relationship.

Kelis’ divorce petition, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, was filed this afternoon. The Milkshake hitmaker is asking for spousal and child support, as well as joint custody of their baby.
