Nicole Kidman: ‘Tom Cruise Wanted me to be Seen, Not Heard’

Posted by Adam

Nicole KidmanNicole Kidman felt suffocated in her marriage to Tom Cruise — because the actor wanted her to be “seen and not heard.”

The actress — who divorced the Top Gun star in 2001 — opened up about her failed marriage to British magazine Easy Living.

“I felt I became a star only by association,” she told the publication.

Kidman, 41, added that shortly after her split from Cruise, she cowered in the shadows because she lacked confidence in her own career.

“I didn’t think [the early movies] were very good, which is why I would always cower in the background,” she said.

“I thought, ‘I don’t deserve to be here.’”

Nicole added that she and Tom “would go to the Oscars and I would think, ‘I’m here to support him.’ I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and be seen and not heard.”

Kidman now raises 10-month-old daughter Sunday Rose with her new husband, country music star Keith Urban.

“‘I can’t bear to be separated from Sunday Rose. That’s why I haven’t yet gotten a daytime nanny, but at some stage I probably will have one,” she said.

Nice to see a recycle of a 6 month interview. If they want a new interview, they should ask her instead of rehashing what is old news

She opened up to Easy Living magazine? LMAO! Those quotes were taken out of context from an interview she gave to Glamour magazine over six months ago!

What a twist of what she actually said. I was actually about to write off Nicole Kidman. It seems every interview she has to bring up her marriage to Tom and all she went through. It is getting old. She was and is an adult and benefited quite nicely from her marriage that just a few years ago she was saying was so wonderful and she was so heartbroken and confused at its demise. Enough Nicole. But in her defense this “quote” was actually a distortion of what she said. She didn’t say Tom felt like she should be seen and not heard. She said she felt that way because of her crappy early movies. That is a big difference. Stop the irresponsible slandering.

Who writes this misinformation? Perhaps the writer would like to have his or her relationships made public and then have words turned around to say things that are untrue just so he or she could deal with the drama. It seems to me there is plenty of REAL drama without purposely trying to conjure it up with your backward spinning of the truth. Maybe whoever you are you should find a new job and allow someone who doesn’t NEED to misrepresent a story do the writing. Apparently YOUR readers aren’t as gullible as you’d like! Get a real life!

I agree with the previous posters .

This is just a old recycled interview from Glamour and not anything new .

I also am disgusted in how you twisted her words to be a slanderious headline against Tom , when anyone who actually reads the artical would know she wasn’t saying that at all.

Nicole clearly was expressing HER OWN feelings of inferiority and being overshadowed by saying “I felt” and “I thought ” , no where does she say that’s how Tom made her feel or demanded she be.

That being said , Nicole is right in that she “became a star only by association” with Tom. She also used his fame , power and connections and all of the very things that made her feel so inferior and overshadowed for all they were worth and gained everything she has now from her marriage to him , so she really has no reason to complain.

Nichole Kidman is a very good actress and maybe Tom Cruise wouldn’t be where he is today without his first wife. Did anyone ever think of that? Yes, that may be how Nicole felt, but one can see how she could feel that way. All the attention was given to him. Remember, she had a big part in the movie Far & Away also. Tom is not Almighty, a good actor, but not the Almighty. Let’s just give them both the credit they deserve and leave it at that. She owes him nothing for her career because in my opinion, she made it on her hard work and effert. Congrats to both of them.

Nicole Kidman was not Cruise’s first wife. Mimi Rogers was.
