Mariah Carey Liked Going Dowdy For Movie
Mariah Carey had no qualms about swapping her glamourous image for the role of a dowdy social worker in her new film Precious.
“The only reactions from fans who have seen the trailer and twittered me have said the movie’s amazing,” the Touch My Body hitmaker told People magazine at the Cannes Film festival where she was attending a screening of the film.
“No one has said ‘Girl I can’t believe you are with those dark circles under your eyes and wearing a wig and looking nasty.’
“No one went that far.”
Carey sports conservative clothes to play a social worker in the movie, based on the book Push by Sapphire, about a young girl growing up amidst terrible domestic abuse in Harlem.
“The book is intense and it is life changing,” she confided to the Cannes press.
“I said ‘let me peel layers away of who the world thinks I am, of who I personally think I am as a performer, as anything, and truly become this woman who has a large responsibility.”
