Tori Spelling‘s husband, Dean McDermott, treated her to a surprise birthday party on May 16.

The 90210 star had expected to celebrate turning 36 with an intimate dinner for two — but McDermott had other plans.

“Dean threw a surprise birthday party for Tori at the Viceroy hotel in Santa Monica,” an insider told Life & Style magazine. “He rented a poolside cabana for 20 people. She had absolutely no idea it was happening until she got there!

“Dean got a big birthday cake made that had a picture of Tori surrounded by hearts.

“Tori looked very happy and was super nice to everyone. She looked lovely in a long pale-blue-and-cream dress and flip flops.”

Meanwhile, Spelling has blamed the media for her recent weight-loss.
