Gerard Butler Doesn’t Want to Play James Bond

Gerard ButlerGerard Butler would turn down the role of James Bond if it was ever offered to him — because it would ruin his career.

The Scottish actor says he likes playing a variety of different roles — but that would likely stop if he ever played the suave British spy.

“I enjoy doing an array of films,” Butler, 39, told Britain’s Shortlist magazine. “If I was to play Bond, that would quickly stop. How likely would I be accepted doing those roles after having played Bond?

“People outside of movies think it would be amazing to play 007, but as an actor you think, ‘Well I don’t know because from then on…

“You do a lot of movies as Bond and you’d become even more synonymous with the role. I think Daniel Craig is a great Bond and good for him, but I would much rather create a role from nothing.”

I like his answer. Whoever plays Bond kind of gets typecasted into the role. It took a while for Sean Connery to be taken seriously as an actor after Bond. Roger Moore was in his heyday as an actor when he got the role of Bond and for him it did help his career a bit but what has he done since he left the Bond Franchise? For Pierce Brosnan, it’s different. He was mostly playing on TV series notably Remington Steel. Bond was a breakthrough role for him. But to rid himself of the Bond image he had to accept roles as the one in The Matador and in Shattered.

Daniel Craig is not such a famous actor and I would say that contrary to Gerard Butler, not many people know Daniel Craig unless they’ve seen him in the first “Lara Croft” movie. What may save Daniel Craig from being typecasted as Bond is the fact that he has accepted roles very different from Bond in between the Bond movies.

I prefer seeing Gerard Butler go from from sweet guy (P.S. I Love You!) to psycho vigilante in Law Abiding Citizen.
