Nicole Richie is apparently feeling guilty that she didn’t reach out to her former boyfriend, DJ AM, before he died.

AM — whose real name is Adam Goldstein — was found dead in his New York City apartment on August 28, 2009 .

Although the cause of Goldstein’s death remains unclear, it has been reported he was found with undigested painkillers in his stomach and mouth.

A crack pipe and some of the illegal drug were also discovered near his body, with his representative admitting he was due to go to rehab to battle his addiction.

And Nicole — who dated Adam from 2003 – 2006 — regrets that she wasn’t able to help the tragic star.

“She’s has a lot of guilt,” a source told the National Enquirer. “She knew that Adam had suffered anxiety since the plane crash, but she didn’t know how to help.

“Nicole and Adam grew apart. But she still loved him.”

The source adds that Nicole — who is pregnant with her second child with fiance Joel Madden — is heartbroken.

“Everyone is trying to help her through it,” the insider said, “but she just can’t stop crying.

“She’s horrified. She had some idea he was depressed, but she had no idea he had started doing crack again.”
