Former American Idol judge Paula Abdul managed to raise a smile for photographers as she arrived at the VH1 Divas Live after party in New York City Thursday night.Despite the forced grin, Paula is said to be furious that she’s been permanently replaced on Idol by Ellen DeGeneres.

“Privately, Paula is very upset,” a source said. “She’s never going to admit it publicly but this stung.

“Paula likes Ellen and she doesn’t want to say a negative word about her and she won’t.

“But the news surprised Paula and upset her — and she had no advance warning and heard about it just like everyone else.”

The next season of American Idol begins in January.
