Robert Pattinson is surprised the Twilight movies have become a global hit — even though the books by Stephenie Meyer were already a roaring success.

The actor — who plays the character of Edward Cullen — says he didn’t think anyone would bother to go and see the films.

“It’s strange because, even though the figures show that the books were successful and sold millions of copies, you couldn’t even buy them in London,” he said. “I tried a couple of bookshops and they weren’t available.

“Hardly anyone I knew had read them apart from one girl, a friend of my sister. I had no idea at all.

“I’d seen Kristen Stewart in Into the Wild and some of the director Catherine Hardwicke‘s other films, and that’s all I thought it was, something really small.”

Rob, 23, recently revealed that he went “nuts” when he first had to deal with the pressures of fame.

He said being followed by fans is “a strange thing to deal with but I try not to think negatively about it because it can drive you crazy.”

“At one point I did go nuts and a little bit paranoid but then you learn to deal with things. I’m coming to terms with it,” he added.
