Miley Cyrus Doesn’t Tip!

Miley CyrusMiley Cyrus committed the ultimate etiquette faux pas while out to dinner last week — she failed to tip the waiter!

The Hannah Montana star — who took home a whopping $25 million last year — spent $70 on food for herself and her sister Brandi at the Outback Steakhouse in New York but didn’t leave any gratuity.

“She pulled an envelope of money out and handed a $100 note over – but she kept all the change,” a source said.

Miley’s spokesman has since insisted the 16-year-old singer/actress had made a genuine mistake in failing to add a service charge.

“Miley didn’t know she was supposed to tip unless she was eating inside,” the spokesman said.

You DON’T have to tip if you aren’t eating inside. I would have done the same thing. This story is no big deal, she did the right thing.

stupid story. really, do you need to be so low as to print this?

  3. Dee says:

Stupid article. If tipping is required for take out, then everyone should start tipping at McDonalds.

  4. Lori Sims says:

No wonder why she stopped twittering!!!

  5. BP says:

Wow, I thought she ate in and didn’t tip…are you serious? You don’t tip if you are carrying out even if you are a celebrity. This story is stupid. Stupid Jerks @ Outback are delirious if they expect to get tipped JUST for typing in order into the computer.

IT WASNT TAKE OUT IF A WAITRESS BRINGS YOU FOOD IT WAS JUST OUTSIDE SEATING YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO TIP AND YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO TIP TAKE OUT TOO ANYWAYS. WAITRESSES AKE 2.63

  7. BP says:

Oh I see so she ate in the outside dining area?! I get it now…so that was pretty messed up. But you don’t have to tip if you are carrying out, sakjhdkajshd! What exactly are you tipping for? Servers get paid less because they live on tips…people who take carry out orders, make more than servers (at least min. wage). I worked at a restaurant…Everyone wants a freakin’ tip now-a-days!

  8. jingo says:

Nobody tips at takeout. Tipping is optional at any time, and when you fail to tip the restaurant should not make it public. I refuse to eat or buy food at Outback Steakhouse from now on because they did not make a statement defending a patrons right to not tip, and for making Miley’s name public when she chose not to tip. There are plenty of better restaurants to eat at anyways.

The waiter never brought her food, it was take-out…read the full story elsewhere.

Get a brain, people…you NEVER have to tip, it’s always optional.

You all are right, you don’t have to tip. But it makes you a D-Bag when you don’t. Even if it is takeout, the take-out staff makes minimum wage and also work for tips. They do alot more than a guy standing in a window at mcdonalds taking money and handing you a bag of food that has been sitting there for hours under a heatlamp. You don’t even have to get out of your car to get a freshmade steak and macaroni, the young girl making minimum wage just boxed and wrapped everything for you and went outside (rain or shine) and delivered it to your car. $70 worth of food is alot of food, and you are counting on a 16 year old girl who makes sure everything is hot and ready for you, no matter how big of an order you place, and you think its ok not to give her a couple bucks. They don’t expect tips like the servers inside waiting on tables, but they deserve something!

tipping for takeouts is like saying tipping for drivethrus. it’s my first time hearing/reading any complaints about anyone not tipping for takeout. why would she have to give the people there extra money for doing what they are supposed to do (they get federal minimum wage already)? that’s their employers’ job. you only tip for dineins because the SERVERS actually serve you walking back and forth if you need something else (and they get the federal tipped minimum wage). tipping is for service in the restaurant.

just because she makes more money doesn’t mean she’s supposed to hand out tip anywhere. she works for her money, so should those waiters at outback.

and if i’m wrong, many restaurants and food chains must hate me (which includes outback from when i went there last summer). then again, i’m not from america =]

    Is it still “silly season”?

Sure, if you’re a millionaire, I think you should have the decency to leave the change, but why should the staff be “outraged” just because she doesn’t? Is there a law that giving tips is compulsory then?

Us Europeans think the whole matter is absurd. Restaurant bills here sometimes include an 10% service charge (which is optional, but almost everyone will pay it), and if there isn’t one, then you’re not expected to pay a tip anyway.

As a bartender who used to fulfill take-out orders at a popular chain steakhouse, I can say it was very RARE to receive a tip on take-out. Most of us did not care either way. Take-out food takes a minimal amount of prepping, and does not take away anything from our exististing seating.

On some occasions, take-out order customers would give me $1-$5. Most of the time, that tip was because I would offer them a complimentary soda or coffee while they were waiting for their meal to come up.

  15. anonymous says:

the thing is, people who work take out art restaurants are paid as tipped employees. therefore, it is reasonable to expect a tip to make up for the lack of money they get in their checks every week.

  16. Former Take-out waitress says:

Here’s the thing, I worked at a Ruby Tuesday’s where my job was soley to get customers to-go orders, I got paid less than minumum wage $6/hr which is more than waitresses because I was told when I started that people would tip about 10% for to-go. I had the job for a few weeks and wasn’t getting close to 10% from the majority of people. I would get leftover change from a dollar or a dollar or I would get the very occassional $5 for a big order but obviously not a lot of people know to tip when they are getting to-go. I completely understand where you are coming from, you get take out to save on drinks and tip but coming from a to-go girl you are not losing much by throwing $2 her way and it’ll be much appreciated. I became very interested in how people concieve tipping ever since the twitter waiters rant and miley and I couldn’t believe how many people think tipping is a priveledge when you are dining in a restaurant. A waitress gets paid about $4 an hour and everything else depends on tips. If you are a person who thinks tipping is optional, McDonalds is the place for you. Fast food chains and cooking at home are both great options for people who don’t understand that tipping is necessary when in a sit down restaurant. If you don’t have the money to tip 15% or more when going to a restaurant you don’t have enough money to go to that restaurant
