Gerard Butler admits he struggled to get into shape for his new movie Law Abiding Citizen — because he couldn’t stop himself from gorging on tasty cupcakes!

The Scottish actor had to flash the flesh in the thriller, in which Butler plays a man out for justice following the corrupt trial of a killer.

“There is definitely a lot of pressure for me to look a certain way and I’m not the kind of guy who always stays in shape,” explains Gerard. “For this one I was inspired by Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver because you see him doing those press ups and straight away you know so much about this guy.

“That’s the only thing that got me back into training and back to looking cut again. But it was hard because I love my cupcakes so my trainer constantly had to chase me around.”

Butler, 39, recently revealed that his life away from movie sets is really rather boring.

“I just like to go back home and chill out with friends. It sounds really boring but it’s true,” he said.

“Sometimes I finish a movie and I get used to a certain lifestyle and when that stops I get a bit lost for about a week. ‘No one is bringing me lunch anymore — I’ve gotta go do that myself?’

“I lose the main point of my focus. Often all I want to do is travel and just get the hell outta there. But I’m actually boring really.”
