Ricky Gervais Refuses to Rehearse For Golden Globes
RICKY Gervais says he won’t be rehearsing for his gig hosting the 67th Annual Golden Globes in January — he’ll just go on stage and wing it.
“Everyone is sitting around and drinking. I’m going to be drunk, and I’m not going to rehearse. So, it’s the perfect gig for me,” Gervais said in an interview Tuesday.
His plans for the show? “Just keep it loose, keep it fun,” said the Invention of Lying star. “I’m not going to try to offend people. I’m not going to try to go for controversy.
“I’m going to do my brand of humor, and I think people know that when I say something off color or cheeky or a little more cutting edge than you might see on network TV, it comes from a good place.”
The rotund funnyman says he won’t be singing and dancing, like recent Oscar host Hugh Jackman.
“Uh, no, I won’t be doing that,” he said. “It’s too much effort.”
Gervais — who has won three Golden Globes — proved to be a highlight during last year’s telecast when he cracked a joke about best supporting actress winner Kate Winslet, her movie The Reader and his own lack of a nomination. “What did I tell you, Winslet — do a Holocaust movie, win an award,” he said at the time. “That’s the trouble with Holocaust films: There’s no gag reel on the DVD.”
The Golden Globes will be broadcast live on NBC on Jan. 17 from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles (8 p.m. ET). Nominations will be announced on Dec. 15.
