WESLEY SNIPES WANTS HIS TAX CONVICTIONS OVERTURNED

Wesley SnipesACTOR Wesley Snipes is to ask an appeals panel to overturn his three federal tax convictions — because he believes the term is “unreasonable”.

The Hollywood star — best known as the vampire-slaying hero in the Blade trilogy and for other tough-guy roles — was handed the sentence in April 2008 after officials found him guilty of failing to file his taxes for five years.

According to prosecutors, who pursued the maximum penalty, Snipes made at least $13.8 million for the years in question and owed $2.7 million in back taxes.

Now attorneys for the star — who was allowed to remain free on bail as he appealed the convictions — plan to argue before the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals that the trial judge erred in multiple ways before and after his conviction.

Prosecutors say Snipes hasn’t filed a tax return since 1998.

Snipes’ attorney also argued the actor should have been granted a hearing to decide whether his trial should have been in New York instead of Florida, where he has homes.

Snipes remains free on bail and was not present at the Atlanta courthouse.

The three-judge panel did not issue an immediate decision.

Some people have gotten by with doing some really horrible things, which amount to less than money owed to the government. Often times very little is done about the most tragic situations. For instance, tax money given for financial ball outs to companies that declare bankruptcy later, or people who are killed by drunk drivers that may not be pursued. If Mr. Snipes can earn the money to pay this debt, he should be allowed to do that.
Sometimes it is amazing to see who gets reasonable treatment under the law. Anyway, most people know that there are government sources that can destroy their lives in the name of making an example of a person. It appears that in this case, the humiliation has been achieved. At this point Mr. Snipes should pay the money in installments.
If the bailout money is not repaid, will anyone be put on trail and going to go to jail for that?

Elaine..I totally agree….Now I know that is a tough prosecution..but the man is very very busy,,and specifically hires someone to do things of that sort..handle his finances and taxes!! I am a stay at home momand stilldonot have it under control…Now there are rapists..murders..petifiliers..drunk drivers that get a slap on the wrist.Ijust couldnt beieve the sentence they had carried out for this man. I have been a fan for years and I hope our Good Lord will lay his hand upon the hearts andminds of the court justice system. I really dont understand sometimes. I believe, they should let himpay it..and thats it..but ohNO…they are going through this to suckout as much money as possible..our government really makes me sick..hearing stories like this..God Bless you Mr. Snipes..I believe he will and u will have your justice!!

The Income tax is and always has been legal. It's both a matter of voluntary compliance and jurisdictiion. One does not have to voluntarily comply, but once compliance is granted then taxes become obligatory. Learn to read the tax codes and turn off the television or put down the video games and most men and women, notice I didn't say "individuals," would not be minions of the IRS.

    • jay says:

Reye, it is voluntary but it is also unconstitutional, therefor illegal.

Tom Cryer went to court and won, Im he knows more then you on the subject.

There is no law making working Americans liable for the income tax

There is no lawful basis for treating personal earnings as 100% profit

Our right to earn a living is as exempt from taxation as our freedom of speech

Learn from someone who lived through the court case,

I've conversed with Tom Cryer and believe it or not, he is aware that taxes are legal for those to whom it applies. That he won only validates my point, which is taxpayers are the only individual obligated to pay the tax which is, by the way, constitutional. Now, if you unwittingly and under perjury profess to be a taxpayer, then shut-up and pay the taxes. I don't mean to be harsh, but I stated earlier that taxes and to whom they apply are jurisdictional and it appears that the point has been missed. Again, if you are a "person" as defined by the tax codes then the obligation is readily evident. If not, and obviously Tom is an example, then you have no legal obligation to pay federal income taxes other than excise taxes. Before you rebut, research the definition of person and I believe you'll concur with my perspective.
