Adam Lambert: ‘I Had Self-Esteem Issues Into my Twenties’

ADAM Lambert admits he had self-esteem into his early twenties.
The openly-gay American Idol runner-up — who caused controversy with his racy performance at the recent American Music Awards — says he often felt like he couldn’t be himself.
“I never wore full-on eyeliner in high school, but I wanted to,” the 27-year-old singer said in a recent interview with the USA Today newspaper. “I wanted to wear nail polish so bad, but I was afraid to. I was afraid to express myself for a while.
“I didn’t feel attractive in high school. I had self-esteem issues into my early 20s. I was a little overweight, I had skin problems. As I learned to feel attractive from the inside out, my self-worth got better.”
Lambert — whose debut album, For Your Entertainment, hit stores at the start of the week — recently revealed that he’s “constantly f*cking buying music”.
“I’m a freak with iTunes,” he told Rolling Stone magazine. “I’m constantly f*cking buying music. I love listening to whatever’s new and fresh, and I’ll go back and explore.
“I went through a period of time where all I was listening to was stuff from the late Sixties, the whole flower power f*ckin’ psychedelic hippie-type music, like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Beatles. I remember at one point I was listening to a lot of disco. I love disco music, anyone who doesn’t love disco, I don’t know?
“I love dance music, I’ve always loved dance music. I think anything with a good beat that makes you feel like getting ready for the evening, going to work, in the gym, it’s inspiring, it makes you feel good. It makes you move and it makes you want to feel sexy and flirt with somebody and have a drink. There’s a lot of that on the record, because I love that.”
