ROBERT Pattinson says the Twilight saga is a “big metaphor for sexual abstinence”.
The hunky actor — who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the movie series — believes the non-sexual relationship between his character and Kristen Stewart‘s schoolgirl character Bella Swan is largely behind the franchise’s huge popularity.
“The success of the Twilight books comes from the fact that fans can lust after Edward and yet, certainly in the first book, there’s no actual sexual contact between him and the series heroine,” Pattinson said.
“Twilight is a big metaphor for sexual abstinence, and yet it’s erotic underneath. There are so many elements in the story which are sexy.”
Robert, 23, recently revealed that he wants to release an album — but anonymously.
“I write songs, that’s true,” the star told Paris Match magazine. “I’ll record a few tracks as soon as I finish the promotion for the movies, but before I won’t to do anything. I don’t want to release an album which has a sticker on it saying, ‘By the vampire of Twilight,’ on it.
“If the record is released one day there won’t be my name or my picture on the cover. Everyone would be biased. No one would listen to it.
“Before I was famous I would have loved to perform in bars and pubs. But this isn’t possible anymore.”
