MAGGIE Gyllenhaal thought she was “so important” when she was joined by the paparazzi in a New York cafe — but was left red-faced when it emerged the snappers were actually downloading pictures of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes!

The actress and her husband Peter Sarsgaard were dining at Big Apple greasy spoon earlier this year and didn’t realize the Hollywood super-couple were in town.

“There were a ton of paparazzi in the cafe with their huge cameras and laptops,” Maggie said. “I was like, ‘Peter, oh my God, they are so into us. They’re swarming us. We are so important.’

“It turns out Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were living on that street. It was the winter, so the photographers would go into the cafe to download their pictures.”

Maggie has previously revealed that she feels sorry for her brother Jake Gyllenhaal because he gets so much pap attention.

“I get so angry, really upset. They chase him in their car and it’s just different for him. More than anything I feel sorry for him that he has to deal with that,” she said in September.

“When [two-year-old daughter] Ramona was born, it was bad. We were living in the West Village in New York, where all the paparazzi are, and it got frenzied.

“They never bother us in London. We were at Wimbledon, walking around with sausages and champagne, and we thought, ‘We are so lucky we can do that — I don’t want to give it up.’”
