Penelope Cruz Recalls First Audition

PENELOPE Cruz believes her best ever performance was on her very first audition.
The Oscar-winning actress — who hails from Madrid, Spain — managed to convince movie directors she was fluent in English — when she could only speak a few words.
“The first movie I made in America I put myself on tape in Spain and I sent it to the director, they gave me the part and then I arrived to the set and he realized that all I knew in English was that dialogue,” she said.
“That and ‘How are you?’ and ‘Thank you’. That’s all I spoke and thank God they didn’t fire me.”
Cruz, 35, recently revealed that she only takes on movie projects she feels passionately about.
“I try to look at the whole thing and say yes to the projects that I cannot stop thinking about,” she told Interview magazine. “If I read a script and the subject stays with me — then that’s when I want to go to work.
“Before, I was very addicted to being on set, and I was doing three or four movies a year for many years. Now, fortunately, I can go to work only when I am passionate about a project, and the rest of the time, I can live my life.
“I’m not interested in doing movies just as a marathon. When I go to work now, I have much more to give. But the other way, you get empty.”
