Natalie Portman Refuses to Play Jewish Characters

Natalie PortmanNATALIE Portman refuses to play Jewish characters in movies.

The actress — who born in Jerusalem and raised a Jew — says despite her heritage, she’s no fan of playing Jewish roles.

“I’ve always tried to stay away from playing Jews,” Portman told Elle UK. “I get like 20 Holocaust scripts a month, but I hate the genre.”

However, Portman made an exception in 2009 and played a Hasidic bride in the film New York, I Love You.

“That was the first thing to come my way that really intrigued me,” she says.

The star also steers clear of romantic comedies.

“It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do comedy,” she explains. “It’s just that I would only get offered girlfriend parts in guy comedies, which aren’t exciting to me, or those offensive roles in romantic comedies where the woman has to have a job in fashion so that she can have nice clothes, and her goal is always marriage.”
