LUCY Lawless says her new TV show is gory, sexy AND extremely offensive!
Sounds like it’s worth watching!
The former Xena: Warrior Princess star admits lots of people will probably be offended by Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which premiered Friday night on Starz.
“I think a lot of people are going to be shocked and they are going to shut off their televisions,” Lawless told the Boston Herald newspaper.
The actress insists she isn’t worried if people start tuning out of the program.
“And I absolutely encourage that because if they’re shocked by the first few episodes, it ain’t going to let up,” she said.
“But for the people who have the stomach for it, this is a bloody good yarn.”
Lawless plays the character of Lucretia, who owns the slave Spartacus (Andy Whitfield) with her husband, Batiatus (John Hannah).
“She does terrible things, but she does them out of desperation and need, which is how most people get involved in criminal activities,” said the 41-year-old. “She is venal, but she is also religious. She is full of contradictions, and my aim is to make her so real and so believable that the audience will say, ‘Yes, you know what? I can see myself doing the same thing if I was in her shoes.’”
“Really, I just feel like as long as it’s germane to the scene, it’s not offensive to me,” Lucy said of appearing topless and in explicit sex scenes.. “If it is relevant and historically accurate, then artistically it makes sense. People in ancient Rome had completely different relationships to people and their bodies and sexuality and the law and religion.”

I watched the first episode last night, I was very impressed. I agree with Lucy, the nudity is historically accurate and not offensive in the least. The use of lighting implies sexuality but limits extreme exposure. I look forward to future episodes.

I watched the first episode last night also. It was great! The drama, the deceit, the treachery, the action…if the sex was the only thing you saw, then get a life! If it offends anyone, don’t watch! I am sure that many more will watch. It portrays one of my favorite historical eras and I find value in that.

Watched the show and thought majority of it was great! But, the slow motion, ridiculously overboard blood flying was extremely cheeesy! The gore was great and pretty realistic, but the cheesy blood flying everywhere in slo-mo really seemed like overkill. If that was just toned down a notch or done in “real time” speed it would have looked fantastic. And, how hot was Erin Cummings?

First was my last. The nudity was great, and the females well chosen, but the drivel in between wasn’t worth it. As seems to be a long time trend, the dialogue speech patterns are incomprehensible half the time. It’s a retelling of a tired old story with the nudity, sex, and the phony-ass blood in a feeble attempt to punch it up. Two thumbs down.

Robert, if you really want to learn about Roman history, try the two seasons of “Rome” on dvd. It was made by BBC, so the lower-class characters like Titus Pullo speak in wierd-ass British colloquialisms, but once you get used to it the show is great, true to history and the beliefs and customs of the time. Plenty of blood, too, but not the comic-book type gushing of Spartacus.
Let’s hope it is at 11 so I can enjoy something since Conan is no longer on. Jay Leno will have to compete with Lucy to grab my attention. Lucy’s looks are a lot better than Jay’s chin.

I loved the show ! The stop action bloody battle scenes were well executed. I had no idea Lucy Lesbo-Lawless was even in the show. So her presence was irrelevant. The plot was a total rip-off of Gladiator – not that it matters though…..

I don’t know much about Lucy Lawless, saw her a little bit in Xena, saw her a lot more in her role on the remake of Battle Star Galactica.
Those were very different roles, and I am impressed with her versatility. I have read other actors comments similar to hers regarding nudity etc. Assuming it’s sincere statements I think I admire their focus on the art and performance.
If the producers would hire Renee O’connor i would definitely keep watching. I just watched the first episode on-line, I don’t have the Starz channel so couldn’t watch last night. I must say after reading the above comments I was surprised that it was actually worth watching! I’ll follow on-line from here on out. I do agree that the blood was cheesy and poorly done, but I just ignored the slow motion parts. The sex was actually not as bad as people made it sound! Future episodes may change my mind though, since from reading the info on the website it seems everyone is sleeping with everyone, much like a soap opera! So if you liked it, watch it, if you didn’t, don’t watch!

Well, I saw one episode and I don’t think that I will be coming back for more. This stuff is not historically correct, I mean, really, they used the word C*%& and B*&$# back in the Roman era? Please, and yes, eventhough they lived a very open and hedonistic style of life, I think that this was carried out over the top. I think this is a over glammed version of 300 which happens to be one of my fave movies, there was more action, less sex and cursing and it made the movie that much more awesome. So if you are truly looking for a history lesson, go to the History channel or watch 300 even, its better than this stuff.

I have watched Zena and Battlestar and really liked both of them, I have not seen this new show(DON’T HAVE STARS) but if the amount of sex is in it that most of these people say, then I’m not interested. I would like to remember lucy as zena or not at all. It’s just not worth it. I guess I’m an old fashioned person and I agree that it should not be allowed for children especially preteens and older teens. Where do you think the kids today learn about sex and violence. I followed Lucy Lawless in Xena, Hercules, Battlestar, and with her singing career. I also watched her made for tv movies and watched Bedtime Stories and Boogey Man just to see her work. Lucy has always been an acrobatic actress, not meaning her flips in Xena, and has always put a lot of effort in her work. I have yet to see the first episode although I can’t wait to see it. If you are truely against seeing blood, violence and sex, change the channel. It is as simple as that. If you don’t want your kids watching anything like that there is the V-Chip.. it is there for a purpose.. to give you control over what your family watches, or doesn’t. We all miss Kevin Smith and are sorry for him to leave us so soon. If you haven’t seen the show.. you really can’t bash it or Lucy Lawless.

Eh… it was barely okay at best. Just watched it through Fancast. At least I don’t have to pay for it directly.
I don’t think the actors are having real sex. If they were, it wouldn’t be on Starz. (The men are probably wearing a sock on their precious tools…) It’s pretty good simulated stuff, though. As for the cursing, some of it seems to be there mostly for effect. I’m sure the Romans of the time cursed to high heaven whenever they felt like it, too. Nothing new about that, either.
Other than that… It’s not engaging enough for me to continue watching it. If I were a fan, then yeah, but somehow the script is too lackluster for me. If I wanted special fx, I’d watch something else…

I believe that Lucy Lawless is an AWESOME actress! I loved her in Xena, saw some of the Battlestar Galactica episodes and loved her guest appearances in X-Files, Burn Notice and CSI: Miami. And, I totally loved the Tarzan series that she was in, before it was cancelled. She’s a very versatile and incredible actress. She absolutely is my favorite actress. I am a little surprised at this role and what it entails. I understand Lucy is an actress and accepts roles as available. But, personally, I wish she would have chosen a more ‘Moral” character to play and tell off her husband. Her husband is sexually exploiting her. Why she would lower her standards and show her body on TV, I’ll never understand. It’s meant to stay in the bedroom. I just don’t understand why she would allow her husband to put her through this!! She’s an awesome actress and could probably get any role she wants! Rob Tapert can go fly a kite, he needs to let Lucy get her own roles. I know she can do it!! She’s fabulous!!
And, if Lucy even says that “people won’t watch this show” then I believe that she isn’t ready for this show to be a hit, but quite possibly may (??) believe she shouldn’t be acting in a show like this. I Love Lucy but I disagree with this role.
Personally, I can’t see myself watching this show, it’s too much against what I believe in. We, as adults should be role models for our children. We want our kids to grow up to be mature, upstanding moral people and personally I want my kids to have a love in God in their heart. Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn’t make it easy for that to happen. I understand sex sells and of course, Hollywood is going to push the limits. It doesn’t make it morally right!! No offense, but I’m glad it’s on STARZ!
Now, I’m not a religious fanatic but I do believe in Jesus!! And, some of you are probably going to call me a right winged conservative religious nut. You know what, I don’t care, Whatever!!! I don’t claim to be perfect and sin-free, I just believe that Jesus will save and forgive me of my sins if I ask for forgiveness and repent. I don’t condemn people who will watch this show, and I believe we should respect each other’s differences and opinions. This is simply my opinion and that’s that.
Mrs. Lawless I have admired your acting, loved you as Zena and believe you are a very talented lady that I have longed to see in more roles. However, I won’t comment on the nudity in Spartacus because your decision to do that was personal, and between you and God. Your acting is still commendable but the directing you and the other actors are getting is highly suspect. The show has great potential, the fight/action scenes good except for the superflous flushes of blood, but the gratuitous profanity detracts from the integrity of the show. Some of the curse words were spawned in the 20th and 21st century yet they are used in the era of Spartacus. They are not necessary, all that needed is a good script and good dialogue.
Yes this is an old story re-worked but the hero fighting against all odds to save his damsel is always a good story.
Spartacus borrowed from the movie The 300, but doesn’t have the integrity and character of The 300. The potential is there, but it’s not there yet. Unfortunately my wife and I won’t be watching because the filthy language is very offensive, and the dumped in sex scenes have no taste in presentation.
