US TV show Ugly Betty has been canceled!

“We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion,” executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson said in a joint statement Wednesday. “We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

The show — which stars Emmy-winner America Ferrera as the style-challenged fashion magazine staffer, Vanessa Williams and Ana Ortizis — is in its fourth season.

Insiders are already weighing in on why they believe the show got the can.

“The show was moved around so much and it looked pretty bleak early in the season, but when we got back on Wednesday nights, it seemed like it might all work out and we could swing higher ratings,” said one Ugly staffer.

“Everyone has been on pins and needles since this summer, so in some ways, it is a relief, even though we will all be out of work. It’s been a stressful year and executives were mishandling the show.”

The source said ABC tried to make the show work in its new time slot, but the writing was on the wall.

“It’s a case of too little too late. After the switch to Fridays, no one did anything to regain the numbers until we lost our core audience. After they were gone, there was a scramble and last ditch effort to save the show,” said the insider.

    I think there were some pretty bad scheduling issues, giving the show poor time slots, moving it around, not making it very clear when exactly it was on, etc. I know a lot of people are going to be disappointed by this news.

    This is my, as well as many of my friends’, favorite show. We are incredibly disappointed with ABC’s decision…I wish another network would pick Betty up…they would certainly have a following, especially if the show was left in a single time slot…
