MEL Gibson launched into an angry tirade when a reporter tried to question him about his controversial past.

The Edge of Darkness actor was heard calling presenter Dean Richards an “asshole” at the end of an uncomfortable interview.

Poor Mel was quizzed on Chicago’s WGN-TV via satellite link when he was asked whether his headline-making alcoholism and highly-publicized recent divorce will affect the way he is “perceived” on screen ”any differently”.

A truly gobsmacked Gibson firstly shook off the question with a dismissive laugh, but then responded, “That’s almost four years ago, dude, I’ve done all the necessary mea culpas. Let’s move on.”

Obviously shaken by the interview, the movie star’s shocking behavior perhaps puts into context his recent comments that seem to suggest he had forgotten and moved on from his troubles.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. It’s really that simple. You can’t do anything but live in the moment and leave the future in the hands of providence and don’t regret the past too much. Maybe just take a lesson from it,” he added.

“Life is life and one has experiences that are painful and some that are very pleasant. One has reward and sacrifice and more reward and disappointment and joy and happiness, and it’s always going to be the same.”
