Robert Pattinson Didn’t Want to do Twilight

Posted by Adam

Robert PattinsonROBERT Pattinson admits he DIDN’T want to star in the Twilight movies.

The British actor — who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the smash hit film franchise — says he was keen to perfect his craft before taking part in such a high-profile project.

“At first I didn’t want to do a movie like Twilight,” he said. “I specifically hadn’t done anything that anyone would see since Harry Potter, because I wanted to teach myself how to act. I didn’t want to be an idiot. I was going to wait for another year to do two or three more little things and then do something bigger.

Twilight came kind of randomly. It was a chance and, as I didn’t have a reputation at all, there was nothing for me to lose.”

“The producers actually asked me to take my shirt off at the audition,” R-Patz recalled. “I thought, if that’s the criteria, then you’ve got the wrong guy. I knew about the audition five months beforehand, but I didn’t want to bother getting a six-pack or doing much else at all in preparation — but looking back, I might have combed my hair. I thought that I had to be this bland guy with his shirt off who people just project ideas onto. At first I thought to play Edward in an interesting way was totally impossible.

“There was a lot of debate about the make-up I wore in the film, as at first it looked ridiculous, because I’m already quite pale with dark eyebrows. I didn’t even think of make-up when I got the part, and I wasn’t too involved in any of the decisions. I was more of a victim.’

Pattinson — who’s rumored to be dating his costar Kristen Stewart — admits that while he liked his character in the first instalment of Twilight, it was only in New Moon that he really warmed to the role.

“I understood Edward much more in the second one than in the first,” he said. “New Moon is about his being compelled to do the wrong thing, and I understand that a lot — especially when it comes to relationships.

“Edward makes a mistake in New Moon that’s acknowledged by everybody, including himself. He’s totally undermined physically and emotionally and so is much more humanised. In the first one, he’s still an idealistic character from beginning to end.

“In New Moon, he’s more the hero of the story who refuses to accept that he’s the hero. I think that’s kind of admirable. Once you’re immune to failure, nothing matters. I saw that after being the hot thing for a few months after Harry Potter; it calms down until no one cares. It helps knowing that pretty soon, no one will care.’

That’s not the impression I got from him in his earlier interviews!

    • Ashley

No I remember him saying he was put off from doing the audition because Edward had a sculpted body & he didn’t see how he could portray a “prefect creature”.

Ashley-Good Happy Sunday.Your “person” was quite busy yesterday when I came on the boards for 15 minutes. She called somebody a b–tch on the Ke$ha,she apparently hates Ethan Hawke because her Great Grandma doesn’t like him.Whose 90 year old Great Grandma even knows who Ethan Hawke is?And also this morning she is commenting under A girl&Justin Bieber lover. She sure is active and creative. All I can say is I feel sorry for you when you had to deal with “person” manic stage earlier this year.:)))))

      • Ashley

Morning EJ. Yep that sounds like her. lol

      • carolyn

Well, if he can’t remember his lines perhaps he also can not remember what he says on any particular day.

  • florence

didn’t he say it was an honor

  • emma

No, I think he mainly wanted to do Twilight because he heard Kristen was attached to it. He also didn’t know it was going to be huge so he thought he would still be relatively obscure and not get noticed.

    • EJ

I agree with Emma.I always heard that the wanted to do Twilight because he was smitten with Kristen before they even met.Apparently he almost missed the opportunity to do it because he almost forgot to send in his audition tape to summit.Apparently he was busy with this play that was about to start in London so he had mixed feeling about sending in the tape.Right before the dealing of sending in the audition tape, the play went under so he overnight his audition tape to the studio. It makes me wonder how big this Twilight phenomina would have been if that play in London had not went under and if Kris would still be with that other guy.

    not his best picture

What a bunch of pap!!! Total contradictions to everything I’ve seen him say on different interviews! He said earlier that the only reason was Kristen , then he said he never realized Twilight would be big, then he said he had to take a valium before he tried out for the part and he NEVER said he was working on a play!!As far as enjoying New Moon more than Twilight, he had said he was glad he didn’t have to be in NM that much. This is exactly what my complaints are about the media sending out this garbage. You’re painting a bad picture because the public is not stupid and we all know it’s made up.I want to know what this guy did to make ends meet before he got the Twilight role. He said he was living in a dirty crummy little apartment in a restaurant, so how was he making money? Was he the dishwasher? All lies.

    • Kim

They usually repeat the same answers to every question that’s asked in different interviews. Anything different would have to be the media’s influence.

  • allie

I don’t know where this came from or when this particular “interview” was held. every one that i have seen he’s said he hadn’t even heard of the Twilight books they were not big in the UK yet.He was the last audition of the day and Kristen was the one that told producers and c. Hardwicke that he was “Edward”.

  • Alexa

Wow. Why would he even say that? But then on the other hand the news that people hear isn’t always true. Hollywood is like that, they make things up about stars.

  • Adam

OOOo. Like I can’t believe he didn’t want to do it…

I think the twilight movies are terrible. Thats all we need in schools and fast food places – more images of sickly pale bloodsuckers who are friendly to certain people. WTF?

    Get a life.

    • Kim

Hello Adam! Well that’s a hostile opinion. lol You sound like my son. I keep reminding him that it’s a movie. Just a movie. It’s not reality! If people can’t separate the both then I think they have issues. Now, I’m not saying that you can’t separate reality from fantasy. ;) I’m talking about the people that are in the crowds waiting for Rob and when they see Rob they call him Edward. That’s strange.

      • Kim

I think the mother’s of some of the teenagers that have gone and seen the movie that say it’s not a good movie for the young girls of today. That Twilight will influence their kids in a bad way. They say Bella is to dependent on Edward and in that she surrenders her identity. I say to all those mother’s that they should then stop their children from watching television because these reality shows are all dysfunctional. Especially Jersey Shore when some guy punches a girl in the face. And the television station airs it. That’s a show in the U.S for all that don’t know it. Plus, they do have vampire tv shows now. So tell me what is worse, thinking that Twilight will have any influence on your child (give your children some credit) or television of today!

He did not want to do Twilight because he read the script, thought it might be campy and that he had to play “the most beautiful creature and get a six pack”. He did not think he had a chance.

A year later, after he saw “Into The Wild” with Kristen, he had a little crush on her. He was keen on making an American movie and wanted to audition with her. He liked her and Hardwicke. He knew they made indie movies and thought it would be a little movie.

They had been casting for a year by that time. The combo of handsome/sexy/boyish/dangerous/beautiful was hard to find until Rob. Jackson Rathbone had auditioned for the part and ended up as Jasper, Edward’s bro. They considered nearly a thousand actors. Narrowed it to 3 and Kristen only connected with Rob and as she said, was the only one who understood how conflicted and miserable Edward was.

“Thirteen” was written by Nikki Reed and about bisexuality and growing up in Hollywood. Hardwicke directed it and at one time, dated Nikki’s dad. That is how she got the part. Kristen knew Michael who is friends with Hardwicke.

So really, Rob was the only lead actor that did not have a foot in the door…got the audition on his own and got the job based on his performance and “chemistry” with Kristen.

Kristen has more chemistry with Nikki, Dakota and Taylor so I think Rob is just sensitive and a good actor. He said he did not know whether he ever had chemistry with her…just strange dynamics, pressure and nerves. He thought the part of Bella would be played by someone MUCH more innocent and sweet than Kristen. He said he was shocked by her and was intimidated.

This is the vid where he says she is fierce and has an anger behind her quietness.

If you watch the outtakes and special features on the Twilight disc, Catherine Hardwicke says that Rob never sent an audition tape in for Twilight. She said that auditions were held and they couldn’t find anyone who suited the role. So her and the casting director decided that after not being able to find anyone in the USA they would try the UK and went through actors around the right age in the UK. They thought about the actors in Harry Potter and thought, “what about Cedric?” They called his agent and flew him over for an audition where he slept on their couch. Straight after the audition they had no doubt that he was Edward. This had nothing to do with Kristen, and I have no idea how that rumour even started. Probably as a joke from Kristen or Rob, but seriously watch the special features disc and she mentions all of this.
