BENICIO Del Toro is being lined up to play soccer legend Diego Maradona in a biopic.

The actor, 43, is the hot favorite to portray the controversial footballer, famous for his addiction battles off the field and his “hand of God” handball against England at the 1986 World Cup.

“Maradona’s story is as colorful and dramatic as any sportsman’s who has ever lived and that’s why he’s the perfect subject for a movie,” says a movie insider. “He has had drama all through his life from growing up on the streets in Argentina to captaining and now managing his national team.

“Benicio is the logical choice to play the lead role. In fact the whole project hinges on him being Maradona.”

Del Toro has previously revealed that he doesn’t consider himself a Hollywood hunk.

“I don’t know, what is sexy? It’s part of the game and I’m not complaining,” he said last month. “But I have never seen myself in a magazine and gone, ‘Whoa, he’s a hunk.’ I’m just an actor and I make movies. I’m not kidding.”
