JAY-Z WANTS RIHANNA TO BE FACE AND BODY OF BURLESQUE NIGHTCLUB CHAIN

Posted by Adam

Jay-ZRAPPER Jay-Z wants Rihanna be the sexy face and body of a new burlesque nightclub chain.

The Rude Boy singer’s mentor thinks the sexy venture would be perfect for her because she is so well known for her curvaceous body and racy stage outfits.

“All the top people think she’s smoking hot,” a source told Britain’s Daily Star newspaper. “They’re desperate to make her the face and body of a new burlesque club. Jay sees it as a great business opportunity.”

Rihanna’s style has already inspired one fellow pop star — her new friend Pixie Lott.

The pair have become inseparable as Pixie supports Rihanna on the European leg of her Last Girl on Earth tour, and have been swapping fashion tips backstage some of which Pixie wants to incorporate into her Lipsy fashion range.

“All Pixie and Rihanna talk about backstage is fashion. Pixie loves Rihanna’s style and would love to incorporate it into her designs,” a source told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper.

Rihanna is set for a busy year, with a book deal in the pipeline and a new fragrance, Route 22, scheduled to come out in the summer.

Well, since Jay-Z has no idea what burlesque is, it seems like the perfect choice for him. “They’re desperate to make her the face and body of a new burlesque club.” Sounds like it.

Hey, I think they guy is talented. But unless Rhianna is going to strip down to pasties in between comedy acts, it isn’t what many of us consider to be a real burlesque show and this venture won’t be taken seriously by anyone who has a basic knowledge of the history of the art of burlesque.

If you want real burlesque and not just pretty girls pretending to take off their clothes, try The Burlesque Hall Of Fame, Pinchbottom Burlesque, the Monday Night Tease, the Colorado Burlesque Fest, The Boston Burlesque Expo, Peepshow Menagerie, the list goes on and on.

It’s always fun to see somebody get excited about the word “burlesque” though. Unfortunately most people who try to co-opt it forget all of the other elements that make burlesque what it is past the taking off the clothes part.

I do wish Mr. Z the best of luck in this venture, but I have serious doubts as to how serious they will take the art and history of what they are getting into.

This article might as well have been titled “Rapper Jay-Z wants Rihanna be the sexy face and body of a new buzzword nightclub chain”.

The word ‘burlesque’ is hot right now so we’re going to see it attached to lots of things that don’t have to do with actual burlesque. Like many burlesque performers and producers, I’m concerned that this glut of burlesque labeled goods — from shoes, to movies, to fashion, to chocolate bars, to perfumes — will have a whiplash effect: when something gets too popular, the public quickly gets sick of hearing about it.

It’s sad and frustrating that these folks with large followings — and little to no knowledge of what burlesque is — have the power to kill a movement that so many people have worked so hard to cultivate.

One can only hope that Jay-Z and others of his ilk treat the source and inspiration for their clubs (and other projects and products) with an awareness of what has come before… but I doubt that’s going to happen.
