Kelis Almost Quit Music to Become a Chef!

SINGER Kelis thought about turning her back on music and becoming a chef.
The Milkshake hitmaker admits admits she considered a career in cookery after struggling to complete her 2006 album Kelis Was Here.
“I took four years off to have a little life between this album and my last album,” said the star, who’s gearing up for the release of her new album Flesh Tone.
“In the interim, I wanted to do something in my life that was just for me.
“I studied to be a chef as a side thing, a little hobby that I enjoyed doing. But I ended up falling madly in love with the food and the lifestyle.
“The business of making the last album Kelis Was Here sucked the life out of me. It was such a hard process and wasn’t an enjoyable experience.
“I needed a break and going to culinary school turned a lightbulb on that I didn’t have to make music and I could do something else I really enjoyed.
“The people in the music business forget that not only is there an entire world of people out there who do not care what we do, we are not creating the wheel.
“If you are not enjoying making a record, you shouldn’t do it.
“I needed a break and to do something where I wasn’t a spectacle and my life wasn’t on a page for someone to critique.
“Going to school puts things in perspective. For me it was a time to reflect and look at everything.
“Food is great. The allure comes from the creative side of it and that it doesn’t matter how cool you are or how ‘in’ or trendy or popular.
“All that matters is are you any good? I am good. It didn’t matter how many records I sold or what my hair looked like or what I was wearing or who I was married to.
“It was like, ‘Can you cook. Did you burn it or not?’ It was therapy.
“I honestly went to school with the intention of not making another record for very a long time. But it was so incredibly rejuvenating that there was no pressure to make a record – so I made a record.”
