BERNADETTE PETERS LINED UP TO REPLACE CATHERINE ZETA-JONES IN BROADWAY PLAY ‘A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC’

Posted by Adam

Bernadette PetersBERNADETTE Peters is the new Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The flame-haired actress is replacing Jones in the Broadway play A Little Night Music.

The play — which tells of the lives of several couples in Sweden at the turn of the previous century and contains the song Send in the Clowns — reopens on July 13.

Zeta-Jones won a Tony for her portrayal of Desiree in the production.

Peters filled in for Kelly Ripa on Live With Regis and Kelly this past Friday and said A Little Night Music composer Stephen Sondheim had phoned her to ask her to play the part.

“We talk every once in a while,” she said. “Actually we were talking about something else actually and he said, ‘By the way’ and I said, ‘Well yes, that would be lovely.’”

Peters, a Broadway favorite, has also had several television roles, including the recurring part of Jodie in Ugly Betty.

The original 1973 production of A Little Night Music was inspired by the Ingmar Bergman-directed 1955 film Smiles of a Summer Night.

Zeta-Jones ended her run on June 20.

“in her prime”…why is it with women people always have to talk about how they looked before, compare it with now, and now is always worse? Is it always worse? I don’t think that’s a given. And why go there anyway? Why is that necessary? Do people do that with men? WHY GO THERE? IS IT REALLY JUST ALL ABOUT LOOKS WITH REGARDS TO WOMEN??? REALLY??? REALLY??? DEVELOP SOME SUBSTANCE IN YOUR LIFE.

First, YAY! I’ll drop a wad of cash to see Peters. Second, and in no way least, is she “the new Catherine Zeta-Jones”. That statement makes me gag. Jones could *never* reach the esteemable level of Bernadette Peters in talent or class. She (Bernadette Peters) is the top, right up there with Angela Lansbury.
