DEBBIE GIBSON COMPARES HERSELF TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND AVRIL LAVIGNE!

Posted by Adam

Debbie GibsonFORMER teen pop princess Debbie Gibson has compared herself to Taylor Swift and Avril Lavigne.

The singer — whose hits include Only In My Dreams, Foolish Beat and Shake Your Love – says Taylor and Avril refuse to be put into a music industry mold — just like herself.

“At that time they were all like ‘put her in a little black dress and put on heels’. They were trying to vamp me up because it’s an easier sell,” Gibson said about the beginning of her career.

“I always said ‘I’m not comfortable with that. That’s not me, let the other girls do that’.

“I look at Avril Lavigne or I look at Taylor Swift. You know, they still wear high-tops with their gown to an award show. That was me.”

Debbie says she isn’t a fan of music’s other sexed-up pop divas — because it’s an image they will have to live with long after the teen years end.

“When you put that image out there, you get a very different perception and treatment by men and people on the streets and in the industry,” she said. “You’re not equipped at that age to back that up, so why kind of play dress up and go there? Wait until you come into your own as a woman.”

yes, but she was older by then not a teen singer. duh.

    • Jen

No she was not…she was barely a teenager herself….were u even there during those times because I sure was.

    • curtisa

there are some nice nude pics of debbie posted at http://urloo.com/QHi0

  • Rosie

She started out as a teen singer and she knows exactly what she is talking about.

We just went to see the Cirque du Soleil show at the MGM Casino in Connecticutt and Debbie Gibson is the headliner for the show. I felt like I was back in the late 80′s listening to my cassette tape. She sounded good but just exactly like she did when I was 13. My sister and I were cracking up for the final number “Only In My Dreams”. We wanted to be back in our leggings with double florescent socks, keds, technicolor shirts and scrunchies in our hair.

      Neil,

Funny, you sure know what she has been up to the last few years.

  • Neil

Debbie is nuts. Why are people still asking listening to what she has to say? She is a washed up has been. Oh gee, my music sucks and people are forgetting about me. What should I do? I’ll pose naked in Playboy and tell people to start calling me Deborah. Crap, that didn’t work. Now people think less of me. Maybe a bunch of less than B movies on SYFY channel. Nope. Keep trying. Avril and Taylor (mostly Taylor) are still making music that people listen to.

    • Bear

Debbie Gibson was washed up by the age of 30. Avril Levigne & Taylor Swift will be, too.

  • marie

Oh I know her!!! Was she the one who stars in the famous “Debbie Does Dallas”?!! OMG! OMG! I am fainting!

    • Bear

Debbie Gibson wasn’t in “Debbie Does Dallas”. That was your momma!.

  • Cj

To all the haters, Debbie is the ONLY artist to write a number 1 song(Foolish Beat) at 17 years old!! Sho some respect, or top it yourself, but that can’t be denied!

  • sakura cherry

i think she was more like BRITNEY SPEARS of the 80′s.. As far as I could remember britney even introduced her at an award show, showcasing her hits & achievements as a good teen singer back then.. she was very popular at that time..

    • RS

She was never as slutty as Britney though. At least – not when she was popular.

  • Holly

Well I listened to her more then I listen to Taylor and Avil,I think their music sucks.I don’t think either can’t sing a tune to save their lives lol.Yea and in like 10+years people will be saying the same thing about Taylor and Avil, who? who where they,Oh the two that have no talent,OH yea I rememeber now….LAMO… Debbie, you are way better then them two, don’t sweat it hun.

  • Rosie

To all the those people with mean spirited comments (but you are entitled to your opinions) remember this is in 15 or twenty years Taylor Swift and all the other very talented people of today will be in same situation as Debbie Gibson. They will still want to perform and still have their fans of yesterday. There will be new talent and those fans will be making their own mean spirited comments about your artist. I am not being sarcastic and I am stating what will be. Now I could be wrong due the Mayan calendar date and nobody will be around in 20 years. LOL.

  • marie

CHRISTINA “FLOPTINA” AGUILERA is the next TIFFANY as to LEONA LEWIS is the next DEBBIE GIBSON

  • caremen

    DEBBIE DOES DALLAS. Lol

  • http://ms1.gotdns.com jonny rocket

    i’m gonna pump her full.

  • Sam

the only difference is…if u werent around in the 80′s u have NO CLUE who debbie gibson is…and people actually know Taylor AND Avril…altho they both suck…its all about TIFFANY…WOOO

  • Dave

Best Beavis & BB episode ever!

Butt-head: Hey Beavis, who do you think would win in a fight between Tiffany and Debbie Gibson?

Beavis: Debbie Gibson would kick her butt.

  • J

“Debbie is nuts. She is a washed up has been. Avril and Taylor (mostly Taylor) are still making music that people listen to.”

I was never a fan of Debbie Gibson’s, but in her day she was as popular as Taylor and Avril. The industry was a bit different in those days, but just as relevant. There will be a time when some people will comment “Avril and Taylor are nuts. is still making music people listen to. They’re just has beens.” What comes around goes around.

  • Tiffany

Really? I think ‘only in her dreams’ is she that good!

  • Kingfish

Gibson recorded at 15, became known at 16 and a superstar by the time she was 17. There was nothing wonderful about her songs, but some were catchy, just like Avril and Taylor. And BTW, CJ, check to see how many #1 songs Taylor has written, and how old she was when she did it.. Seh has Ms. Gibson beat

  • Frank The Tank

I listened to Debbie when she was in her prime, my H.S. girlfriend at the time absolutely loved her. Debbie was good but as with most teen stars they just fade away (ie: Tiffany). But she is certainly talented and pretty easy on the eyes which always helps. I believe she has also done some musicals in NY as well as the awful movies on the Sci-Fi chanel. She is older now and just trying to stay relevant so just let her have her time, if you don’t like her then don’t listen or watch.

  • Rob

Actually, If anything, Avril and Taylor should be comparing themselves to Debbie. She pioneered all the rocking, singing, producing, and dancing. What did they do besides be younger.

  • bart

She wrote all of her own music and played almost all the instruments and she was a teenager…Other than Taylor Swift, who has talent, the rest of these girls are corporate constructs with dozens of people to make them who they are…Today’s music is shallow…awful…We are post-renaissance, but this generation is too stupid to know what that means….victims…

  • nowell

debbie, taylor, and avril are all great singers having their own styles that earned them the adulations. let’s just put it this way, they had their time and they captured the attention of people across the globe. it’s fine to compare them along side. either way, there will always be differences – - and as defined by us, not them, really.
    e.g.
    debbie – tiffany
    avril – alanis
    madonna – cindy

  • gina

What is she smokin, she sucked she should get lost already!

  • Jones

I loved Electric Youth as a kid.

‘Lost In Your Eyes’ is still one of my favorite songs.

  • SeXXeAMBER

what songs did she do again ? Anyway I was on this really funny site called, peopleofthemta.com … has anyone ever been to it ? HysTerical!!!!

  • Scully

Happy Birthday, Debbie! I think she’s a good singer, I think many of the posters here are too young to remember how big she was.

  • Ken

Debbie had her peak back in the late 80′s but she has been in quite a few plays on Broadway since then along with recording additional albums. She wrote all of her own songs and had many hits. She is a far better talent than any of the Britney’s out there today.

  • RPB

I saw Debbie Gibson in a couple of Broadway and touring shows and she was more than competent. She has pursued a legitimate theater career, I think, with a lot of honor. She must have made millions in her day and certainly made an indelible impression on many of her fans, but unlike so many has-been entertainers, she still goes to auditions to prove herself. Whether Taylor Swift will grow into a viable career as a songwriter and performer is still to be determined, but how great is it that former teen stars like Gibson can become something more than losers and actually age gracefully?

  • Sydney

I love how people refer to celebrities as has beens. No one is on top forever. Give me a break. I want to ask that Joe Smoe ..what have you accomplished with your life? Debbie Gibpson… was the Taylor Swift of her day.She broke a lot ground. Show her some respect!

  • Say Whaaaaaa

I agree with the defenders of Gibson in this scenario. Being a child of the late 70′s and 80′s, Debbie was the Avril and Taylor of her day. Little girls worshiped her and even dressed like her (remember the hats w/ guys dress shirts & biker shorts craze anyone – that was Deb who did that).

She was even tapped as the new Madonna @ one time like Britney and Christina. But those people grow up and no one cares. The only time Spears is in the news, is for some publicity stunt. And Aguilerra is constantly reinventing herself with no success. Even her latest outing in the world of music was such an attempt to be like Lady Gaga (who will also fade away – trust me) it was laughable.

Lavigne should be left out of her mouth because she’s done in popularity at this point. And Swift will have a successful career in the future in COUNTRY only as they love all their artist. The POP world will forget her unless she turns slutty. She’s be remembered as the blonde haired blue eyed girl that was verbally attacked by the big mean BLACK MAN (I’m being sarcastic).

I give Debroah Gibson respect for at least being classy about TRYING to stay in POP culture. She did PLAYBOY and showed her breats and some pubic hair. Which is pretty much NOTHING compared to a SEX TAPE in which you see an actual PENIS going in and out of the intimate parts of a female body like your mouth, anus, and vagina. Thats tastless if your known for singing about puppy love.

  • Cj

@kingfish, yeah but Debbie paved the way cuz at that time, a teenager writing, producing and playing most the instruments was mostly unheard of. Prince did it for example, but he was 19 when he earned his 1st number 1 hit.
    @Sidney, I absolutely concur.
Lastly, in my opinion, feeling goosebumps all over is a measure of a good/great song, and Debbie’s “Foolish Beat”, I felt that song for it’s musical value. Taylor Swift and the rest of the bunches music has never done anything for me. In other words, If I can’t feel it, the song or the artist ain’t cuttin’ it, point blank.

  • Wanch

Debbie Gibson is underrated. She paved the way for Teen Stars of today.

The youngest artist ever to produce, write, and perform a number 1 hit “foolish beat” (at age 16)… a record which still stand up to this day.

These teen stars of today inherited their stardom from Debbie.. they should give credit to this girl.

I predict missing today’s budget deadline will root the end of this country as we know it.
