in America she is able to condemn the country that gave her the civil and political rights she has demonstrates the extent of ingratitude that only the human species possesses. Frankly I could care less about the number of children Angelina and Brad have. What concerns me is the mis-information she bases her beliefs on regarding the history of Thanksgiving. I always preferred Thanksgiving to Xmas, esp. considering how the latter is a “holy day” for capitalist consumerism.

It is easy to tear down these celebrations, but in a time when people must struggle to define “family” we need to hang on to any ritual that brings family together.

As for Thanksgiving as Holocaust denial, the first Turkey Day took place within a year of the Separatists landing at Plymouth. They lost 50% of their original number in that first winter for which they were unprepared. The first Thanksgiving was simply a thanks to their god for preserving the remaining lives; they saw it as more of a necessity rather than a celebration (Puritans didn’t “celebrate” much of anything). And, too, the first feast took place 15 or so years before the first serious Puritan/Indian conflicts. (And, too, weren’t the Puritans also preserving the English tradition of the Harvest Festival?)

It should also be remembered that atrocities were perpetrated by both Puritan and Indian alike. They were wars for survival (not land)–the Pequot Tribe et al, saw their means of subsistence threatened; the Puritans saw their very existence in North America threatened. When one fears for the ultimate safety of his family, the resulting violence can be brutal, and it was. Not only were whole Indian communities razed, but so too were entire Puritan coombes, esp. in Metacom’s War.

This is my greatest critique of diatribes like the one above–all too often, only half the story is considered in order to advance an agenda. We have (thankfully) the ability to sit in our ivory towers and cast condemnation; but as so many psychological studies have shown, when confronted with life and death situations, moral judgment often flies out the window, except in those rare Christ-like examples.

We are the beneficiaries of both historical hindsight and cultural diversity. We now understand the mistakes of our ancestors, which mostly resulted from their limitations at the time. Therefore, I am less inclined to judge, but rather I want to understand. After all, the motivations of the Puritans were the same as the Indians–they loved their lives and their families, and hoped to live another day to enjoy them both. Don’t we all??
