Anderson Cooper Failing Miserably: Ratings For Anderson Cooper’s CNN Show Plummet

The CNN star’s show, Anderson Cooper 360, had its worst ratings ever.

The program averaged 206,000 viewers in the coveted 25- to 54-year-old demographic, the traditional measure for attractiveness to advertisers, the lowest since the show started in 2003, according to Nielsen ratings assembled by TV by the Numbers.

Cooper recently revealed how Lady GaGa got him drunk on whiskey.

The CNN journalist said he was excited to meet the Bad Romance singer when he recently interviewed her for 60 Minutes — even though GaGa got him to drink on the job.

“We actually ended up that day in a pub in London drinking Jameson, which I don’t really drink,” he said.

“So, she got me to drink like two of them, and by the end I was ready to have the interview be over because I really sort of couldn’t ask anymore questions.”

    Note to Anderson Cooper: You are too good and too everything else to be seen with the likes of Kathy Griffin, and if I were you I would refuse anyat put me in contact with her. She is the one of the lowest of the low and you don’t have to sink to the level of co-hosintg anything with her. That cannot possibly do your career any good.     He is far and above the best tv journalist. His reports and questions are non-biased, always. This is the way tv reporting is supposed to be. I am sick of all the opinions by other journalists who treat us like we are stupid, and don’t know what a politician is saying. It is very easy to tell the political affiliation of each and every other reporter journalist, including the local newscasters (I use the term w/sarcasm)!

    He also needs to do 2 full hours instead of repeating the 1 hour like 5 times a night. I think overall CNN is going down the tubes. They need more commentators and more general news all over the world, not just the political event of the day that they “beat to death” with analysis from one host to another. I’d rather read a book in which I can learn something, not all these idiot talking heads. Too bad, because I thought Anderson Cooper was one of the better ones out there.

    Anderson Cooper is an intelligent, concerned individual, and an excellent journalist. As a Haitian-American who watched the CNN’s coverage of the Haiti Earthquake I was moved by his genuine feelings for the suffering of the Haitian people. I agree with Don who says that people “want to dumb down” His show is great and he is NOT FAILING MISERABLY!

    Gay, straight, I really couldn’t care less what he is, but I’ll have to admit that his show has gone downhill in the last 3-4 months. Used to watch him every night, but that’s not the case anymore. Wish he’d distance himself from that “hoochie” Griffin. He thinks everything she says is funny which really makes me wonder about him. I will not be watching them on New Year’s Eve. The comment she made to him two years ago on New Year’s Eve was downright ignorant and I’m amazed he even speaks to her. She’s a low-class bimbo and he can do better.

    Frankly, I think he is a fantastic journalist. Compelling. Sharp. And I love that he has and shows a human side. That he has been known to watch reality TV, as per his other appearances on Co-hosting on Regis or being interviewed by Ellen. I find him even more interesting.

    Anderson is a fine journalist, and his programs generally are really provacative and interesting–very good production and research. However, his personality is rather dry and uninteresting. A lack of affect is a little annoying. I usually tune in when there is nothing else on and am always surprised at how much I learn from the show. Problem is, I really like Sanjay Gupta filling in–great delivery, with the charisma that is lacking in Anderson.

This is the normal ratings that all shows; news, sports or otherwise, are graded on to determine the amount of viewers in specific time slots and age ranges.

    He is really good reporting from the field with his great team like Dr. Gupta, Nic Roberts, Peter (the Afghanistan expert), etc…But when he is behind the desk, I still like him, but not enough to watch every night. When he goes to Iraq, Haiti, New Orleans, Afghanistan – all those important places, his ratings are low – people like him, but do not watch even when he is doing important stories like that. I think the public thinks these important stories are “depressing.” I think they are necessary stories that I wish more people would watch, raising his ratings.

    The Nielsen rating system is archaic. It simply is not accurate enough to determine whether these shows live or die. It needs to lay down and die itself already, because it has killed a lot of great shows.

    I watch Anderson Cooper every night. I think he is a great journalist and CNN should be proud to have him. I think he has a way of bringing the news to us without his personal opinions like they do on FOX. As I was reading the posts, I couldn’t understand why anyone had to bring up the fact that he may be gay. What has that got to do with anything. I get so tired of people taking shots at other people. I fail to understand why people can’t let other people live their life the way they want and not be judgemental. I am a woman and I love watching and listening to him. My 17 year old daughter loves watching him. She is patterning her future career in journalism after Anderson. She has learned a lot from his way of interviewing. It’s funny how they talk about the Nielsen ratings when I don’t know of anyone who’s tv is programmed to nielsen. I wish everyone a happy new year and best wishes to Anderson Cooper!

    Anderson Cooper is an entertainer, not a journalist. I feel he does a pretty good job of trying to imitate a journalist so I watch him once and awhile depending on the story he’s covering. One area of agreement I share with many others who have commented on Anderson Cooper’s career: Kathy Griffin does him no good. She is terrible and CNN does Anderson Cooper a terrible injustice by pairing him with her on specials like the New Year’s Eve Show. I switched to CNN during commercials on Fox and can honestly say that Bill Hemmer and Meghan Kelly on Fox were far superior to Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin on CNN. I think, however, that the CNN show would have been much better minus Kathy Griffin who is not funny but downright disgusting.

    To those saying the Nielsen’s are archaic you are in the minority to think this. You must like off the rim low rated shows then. The fact that Nielsen is right on the money with what shows draws the most interest on the web proves you wrong. The most blogged about shows seem to have the highest ratings. Now how does that happen? HMM? If a show isn’t good then no one watches and definitely won’t talk about it on the net. 360 used to have many blogs dedicated to it. From what I see now there is only one left and it barely does the job now.

    Anderson used to be an awesome journalist. I say used to because now he barely leaves the studio and barely does his own reports. He relies too much on others and has lost touch with his true self, I feel. He started believing the hype of the “celebrity” AC and that has hurt him. Now he would rather hang at bars with his celebrity friends or at parties and not go out in the field to do anything. That is what is hurting him. He was great in Katrina and OK in NOLA and Haiti but what else really has he done besides that? Not much at all. That is sad to me because he is wasting his great talent on nothingness…including this new talk show of his.

    I tune into Anderson Cooper whenever I get a chance. I do believe he spent way too much airtime on the oil spill this past summer. It may have been news worthy but not enough to spend live airtime down there a for full program night after night after night.

    I’m not an Anderson Cooper or CNN watcher. The article did not need to add the tagline “career going down the toilet”, but I guess that’s the only reason I bothered to read it.

    Anyway, the ratings are fairly accurate and unbiased. People are either watching or they aren’t. It’s up to CNN and their sponsors to decide this guys fate. Unless CNN considers themselves a public service or something akin to NPR… This show can’t survive. They will change the time slot, add a side kick, revamp the format, etc… In the end people either enjoy watching you or they don’t.

    Oddly, the polarizing figures do better because both their fans and detractors tune in. Many media personalities on the right have their ratings boosted by those that are compelled to tune in even though they disagree with the message. The left has not found that person yet. Keith Olberman was starting to draw me in because I became enraged by his comments. I soon realized that barking back at the TV was pointless and futile and that the best option was just not to watch at all.

    Ultimately, a network with a larger audience share is where you want to be. Even Glenn Beck is a ratings success on Fox. I’m Republican, conservative and loyal to my base, but I have to admit that Beck is dimwit. Who the hell watches that show and why?

    Good luck Anderson. It’s a competitive business.

Anderson doesn’t dumb down like a lot of other so called journalist.He is very intelligent and always tells it the way it is. The problem is that he covers stories that are best left for jounalist who are all about sensationalism rather than stories that have an impact on peoples lives. Why he was interveiwing Lady Gaga and Emiem..I couldn’t hazard a guess. He needs to cover important issues not fluff stories. On a side note (Anderson shake Kathy Griffin).

    To Dave I ask just one easy to answer question: Why do we need the FCC to crack down on Fox when it offers the only counter balance to the leftward lean of the other five TV outlets you listed ie: CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS and NBC? The only reason Fox is a ratings success is that offers a true alternative to the others. If they were all “fair and balanced” like Fox, Fox would be just another mediocre station with ratings on a par or perhaps even below the others.If you want a real radical alternative to Fox, watch MSNBC once in awhile like I do. And to those who imply that Fox is the only TV outlet with polarizing celebrities, I challenge you to listen to the hate speech with a leftist slant spewed forth by Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow on MSNBC and Paul Bagala on CNN on a regular basis. They make people like Bill O’Reilly, Glen Beck and Sean Hannity seem calm by comparison. As far as Anderson Cooper is concerned, he’s acceptable but I agree with others who say that he needs to be more journalist and less celebrity, and by all meals, put distance between himself and Kathy Griffin.

    i’m sorry but i disagree…he’s intelligent, funny (in his own kind of way) and someone i can relate too. i’m an “educated” individual (44 year old engineer) with a helluva sense of humor and i would much rather watch anderson cooper and kathy griffin in times square than any other of the bubble gum crap shows they try to shove down our throats on new years eve. i guess some people just don’t get it, too bad because you’re missing out on some freakn funny stuff…happy new year anyway

    Anderson Cooper is probably the best journalist on TV. The only one on night time cable TV that even close to being objective. Get’s a lot of news on his program. CNN would be a big loser if they sack him. So would the American public.
